Hello, Many thanks for accepting me into the group. I have a question being new to the hobby. Has anyone used the ‘Rock Identifier App.’ Free for seven days. If so how accurate are the results?

Hello, Sid! Welcome to the forum! I've not used it but may give it a try now. Is it for Android? Apple?
By the way, are you into tumbling? Cabochons? Just starting out? Looking forward to seeing your work!
EDIT: I just looked at the reviews in Google Play. YIKES! not very positive ... I suspect it doesn't work very well, given the reviews.

Forget the rock ID app for your phone unless it is free. Use your phone to post photos here and we will help you out. These people are very good at ID and almost as quick as the app. I will have to test a few of these apps as I still have a test set of minerals used for geology 101 lab tests.

Hello Paul,
Thank you for your reply. I used it on mu iPad but after reading the reviews and comments have decided not to continue with it.
Using my homemade tumbler I have just completed my first tumble of rough rocks which I purchased with my grits.
Hopefully I will be able to upload an image.
Best regards, Sid. No luck with image.

Welcome!
I met a lady today at the rock show that had this app. I found out she had it because all of a sudden
She said to me "oh, I love this jasper and I have a huge hunk at home, maybe 10 lbs or so.
And I said "what stone are you referring to"
and so she points to a necklace and says this one.
And I said. That's Ohio Flint and if you have a 10lb chunck of it, I'd be VERY interested in looking at it.
And She says. "Well, My app says it is jasper"
She proceeded to tell me about the app and I should probably get it and she scanned a few more rocks which told her, agate, jasper, amethyst
Hhhmmmm I think I'll pass

Several people here post photos direct from their phones maybe someone will post some instructions. The photo upload option on the site works great you just need to follow the instructions to the letter.
We have a joke at the rock club if you don't know what it is just call it jasper no one will know the difference. I have a friend who is still teaching Intro Geology at a local collage. I will have him get the app and see if it can past the mineral ID test they give students. I gave the test once with 30 samples of quartz out of my collection. Different forms and colors a few got it but not many. The best people to ID rocks are long time mineral club members. When we get past covid and back to in person meetings everyone is going to have a box of rocks to ID. It is very hard to see anything close up on Zoom.

The app has been pretty accurate when I used it, other than it does give multiple options, but one was always the correct rock.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have decided not to use the app.
Regarding uploading images, I am using an iPad. I followed the advice given on the forum to the letter in setting up Cloudinary. But it still is telling me that the
Upload preset is not found.
I have sent an email to support.
Stay safe. Sid.

Well seem to have the upload sorted thanks to the very quick response from Cloudinary support team. One question, when an image is posted is there away of checking size of image in this forum. Thanks, Sid.

I just found out about the "Rock Identifier" app and I tried it on my Android phone. It seems to be pretty good for obvious rocks that I already know (i.e. ones I bought as specific rocks)... but of course for rocks that I just found and that I have no idea what they are, I can't really tell how accurate the app is :-) I have not signed up for the free trial or created any account, but I can still use the app. Edit: just to be clear, the app I tried is this one: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.picturerock.rockThere are a number of similar apps in the Play Store. If anyone has experiejnce with other ones, share your opinions :-)

These apps are pretty much worthless. They may luck out with really common, easy to ID stone like a quartz crystal, but for most stones they cannot differentiate since this often requires things such as hardness, density, streak, etc. that the app cannot determine.
