So, my wife asked me yesterday if it was too early to put up Christmas stuff...I responded I felt it was about three weeks too early for that kind of stuff to go up. I said let's focus on the holiday for this month and be thankful for all the wonderful things we have in our lives...like family, friends, and really fun hobbies! Fast forward to this morning. We were having a cup of coffee and I asked her what her plans were for the day. She said, "I would like to go out to my parent's farm and pick some apples." Which wasn't really all that high on my excitement meter...until she said, "And I was thinking we could just go up to Keystone to The Rock Shed and you can pick out your Christmas presents since the weather seems to be holding." Well...I didn't think I was a hypocrite...but my "holiday spirit" immediately kicked in and I told her what a wonderful idea that was...so I had to make an "exception" to my Grinch attitude from yesterday! LOL Without further adieux...I present you my early presents! LOL. (No...I didn't get that massive petrified wood log in the back of the trailer! LOL) Blue and Gold Tiger Eye Stromatolite Carnelian Agate (Brazil) Sagenite Agate Sodalite Gold Tiger Eye

What!, no apple pictures?!!! I should have known someone would want to see them! LOL I believe they are Winesap Apples... Awww... that was really sweet. And the rocks are cool, too. Thanks Tela! She was SUPER patient with my digging through the bins. She was even super stoked about the Blue Tiger Eye and the Sodalite.

She just made an apple crisp earlier this week from the last batch of apples we picked...it was delicious. (Notice the past tense there! LOL) And I did have vanilla ice cream on top! She said she's going to dehydrate some of these and then freeze some. I'm trying to talk her into another apple crisp... LOL

So you got all of those amazing rocks and she only got two apples?!? I'd say you made out very well!
I love that mixed blue/gold tiger eye, but my favorite of that new bunch has to be the sagenite. That looks like it is going to make some great cabs for you.

That looks like it is going to make some great cabs for you. Yep! Just two apples...along with four more grocery bags of them! LOL - I was "elected" to use the 10' fruit picker pole to reach the high apples! They all looked good from the ground, but it was a 50/50 pull...one good and one half picked by birds - which was always on "top" of the apple, so you couldn't see it from the ground. LOL I'm pretty excited about that Sagenite Agate. I looked through the whole bin, and this was the only piece that looked like any significant slabettes could be cut from it. I'll be honest, I'm stoked to work every one of these pieces.

I just told my wife what you said...so she immediately called her mom and is talking to her right now to verify! LOL - Her mom says she absolutely believes they're Winesap...but a friend of the family ate one a couple weeks ago and swears they're Honey Crisp. LOL - So I guess there's a chance... (See...I'm as good at identifying apples as I am rocks! I know which ones are red and which ones are green! )

Honey Crisp originated in Michigan, I believe. I remember going to the Farmers Market at lunch in downtown Chicago and seeing them for the very first time. Some folks from Michigan had a booth and were re-introducing them to the market. They said they were heirloom apples. I bought some and was hooked. Took another year or so and then all of a sudden they were all over the place.

Then I'm betting they're not Honey Crisp. That tree has been in that spot for 52 years...

I am SO lucky to be so close. It's only a couple miles down the road from my in-laws farm...and it's on the way back home when I go out hounding at Teepee Canyon. I keep telling my wife there must be something wrong with the steering column on my truck because it always veers off towards Keystone on the way home! LOL When we were picking apples, invariably several would fall while we were trying to pick others...so I kept telling my wife to put the ones that fell and were now "bruised" into the "applesauce bag"! LOL I've only worked some red Tiger Eye...and it didn't go well, so I'm excited to see how these work. They cut like a hot knife through butter on the 10" saw! The red Tiger Eye actually "shredded" while trying to work it. Another member worked some from the same batch and the same thing happened to him while trying to work it. Near as we can figure is it was either heated or cooled too quickly in the heat process. (Total guessing...)

I just finally got it going after having a giant bowl of apples on the table for a long time. I'll have to remember that when working with tigers eye. I have a tiny slab that I'll cut up soon to make some cabs out of. I would become great friends with those in-laws if I was you! Lol. Teepee canyon? Sounds like a great with a capital "G" place to live.
