Hello, I have been tumbling rocks for just under a year and have used both rocks I've found and rocks I've bought. I want to find a rock that will tumble into a dark green color, which so far I haven't seen. Any suggestions?

Not a tumbler, but, as with cabbing, starting off with dark green stones will help. Some jaspers are dark green, and probably your best bet. Jade, is often dark green too, but it’s tricky to work with when cabbing, as you want to get it dry and hot. I suspect you can do that with tumbling, but I’ll leave that to others.
ETA bloodstone might fit the bill, if you don’t mind some red spots

In addition to blood stone (one of my favorites!) you can also do a search for dark green serpentine. If you don't mind a man made stone, green goldstone is fun. It has little sparkles all through it.

Let me know which are right and I'll identify the material. All are green. With flash and w/o.

Aventurine comes in dark green and tumbles well and not very expensive.

Well, that aventurine is about the size of a fist and took many months. Because I like green rocks I already had these together in a bowl. Doing some large pieces of Gary green jasper from Oregon that I'm excited about.

Bob those look real nice. Could you please take the time to ID some of them for all of us. I have lots of green rocks in my I don't know bucket because I will not give a rock to a child unless I am sure what it is. The first thing they ask is what is it. That is a great assortment.

Aside from bloodstone which often has the red inclusions, I'd look at green imperial jasper from Mexico. Tumbles to a nice mirror polish with ease and comes in a nice dark green color.

Green aventurine Bloodstone Very low quality chrysoprase sold here and there--I will probably get rid of it. Kambaba jasper (not really jasper). Maybe 10% of pieces will achieve a shine. Higher quality Chrysoprase. Prehnite, a very pale green and I like very much. I have much more in process and only started tumbling this recently. Unakite. Nephrite jade. Seems to never look real good up super close. Green moss agate (not really agate). Misc. that I can't identify for sure. Some of these are my fav green rocks. I suspect a lot of them are Epidote or mostly that. Many of the ones that look a little bit like granite came from Lake Superior mostly the Canadian side. The one at far lower left with the brown and pale green sort of mixed often will have elemental copper in it too. I really like green rocks and have many more, including some very large ones, in process. It was only a few months ago that I've started to separate out my tumbled rocks by rock type in various bowls. But with black, red, and green, I decided to separate by color rather than type. So when I ran into your question, it was fun for me to respond. But I was hoping you would pick the Bloodstone because you are likely to have great success with it if you are beginner. Aventurine is tricky for me even though I have tumbled a lot of it including the other colors too. Bloodstone is also called Heliotrope, Plasma jasper, and Fancy jasper, though the last name is usually used when the predominant colors in it are not green. Some bloodstone has so much red and yellow and orange in it that there is hardly any green. The very green Bloodstone pieces are a very dark uniform gorgeous green.

You're both welcome.
If you bought green tree agate or green moss agate (neither of which are agate) I think you may be disappointed if you seek a highly polished and fairly uniformly dark green rock.
Just today I had two new types of green rocks get finished. Maybe I can post some pics tomorrow.

This looks cracked, but is actually resilicified and solid. It's green jasper I bought somewhere and a nice deep green. But there is one small corner problem so it's going back to start over at 80 grind. The other one is more gray then green so will not post it.
