Hi holajonathon, thank you so much for the comparisons. The 2" wide wheels on the 8" and space between them would be nice for some of the larger stones. This definitely makes it easier to choose the right one. Thanks. Seems I can't go wrong with the 6". I can always go large later if I have to. Many very accomplished cabbers use a 6" machine. The only practical limitation is cab size, but unless you want to make belt buckle size cabs, a 6" machine will get the job done. Not all 6" machines have the same length shafts. Some with longer shafts allow for more wheel spacing. I think an 8" machine is an overkill if this is your first cabbing machine. Better to get a 6" machine with good wheels, and if you've got any money left, spend it on slabs or rough. A good quality 8" machine + wheels is going to cost $2500-$4000 new. That is a big investment unless or until you are very serious about the hobby.

dshanpnw - I knew if I waited long enough, someone would answer this! LOL - Kidding, I've been swamped all day. I'm glad that stardiamond and holajonathan both chimed in as they both have 8" and 6" machines so they could compare them for you. I weighed all the options and found this particular 6" machine the best choice for me...at least it made the most sense on paper...and I'm lovin' it so far!

Yes indeed, I got a lot of good answers and help. I at least know that I will prefer the cabbing machine over a belt sander to suit my needs. Thanks, and happy cabbing to you.

I know when I started, I thought the slant cabber would fit my needs...but quickly learned a casting machine is what I really wanted to start with. I don't regret starting with the slant cabber, but I'm glad I have the cabbing machine now.

I believe that's the one I picked for us for next year. My wife was speechless when I showy it to her, then she said no. That was more due to her lapidary classes when she was 16. They used modified grinders with a cabbing wheel on one side and buffer on the other.
Seeing your work & Jugglerguy's video sold me on that one.

Thanks Jason, I was really close to buying a flat lap, which wouldn't have been bad, but I need to do other things as well. If I were to purchase a machine today it would be the 6" cabber, and maybe a belt sander later on down the road for the bigger projects. I love your cabs, BTW!

If that's what she was used to, I can understand her trepidation at seeing this. However, it really is an amazing machine...and I'm loving the Nova wheels - as well as their generous spacing compared to other 6" machines. I still think my flat lap still has its reasons for keeping it...so I'm glad I have it. I think you've got the right "map" for your purchasing of machines.

Sixteen days ago I got this new cabbing machine. I thought this was a fun picture. These are all the cabs I've done since I got it. There's a total of 97. I guess I slacked a couple days. LOL I hadn't done any of the backs of these, so I got that taken care of tonight...and since they were all together, why not a group shot!

I really have GOT to start wrapping some of these! LOL Wow, Jason, you need a hobby! I was thinking the same thing...but I'm not sure I even have TIME for a hobby! Lol! I'll get there. My response to that is "challenge excepted"! Ha. I'm off for the next 2(?) Weeks so I'll be freezing (oh, I meant cabbing) a lot. I can't wait to see your wraps. You might be getting lots of annoying questions from me soon. I think I'll order some wire. Thanks for the eye candy jasoninsd!
