Here's some Obsidian I worked last night. I guarantee you there are no scratches on these. If it looks like it, blame the photographer because these were a bear to get some of these pictures. LOL Pics 1-2: Flow Banded Obsidian - It's fun to see the patterns in this material. There's a lot of straight line banding, but in a few spots it gave some pattern. Pic 3: Mahogany Obsidian - This actually has an iridescent look to the lighter brown area when the light catches it just right...similar to Tiger Eye. Pic 4: Snowflake Obsidian - I've seen this called several different names, but I like the snowflake nomenclature. Pics 5-7: Mexican Royal Velvet Obsidian - I got this from my sister this last summer. I couldn't work it with the flat lap...but this material is off the charts beautiful (to me)! It's a pain to find the right cut angle when slabbing it to get the iridescent colors to come out...but well worth it when you get it right. This is probably one of my all-time favorite materials now... Pics 8-9: Just a fun shot I took last night showing the reflection... Pic 10: Family fun shot showing the "chandelier" in the reflection. As always, thanks for taking a gander! Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 Pic 4 Pic 5 Pic 6 Pic 7 Pic 8 Pic 9 Pic 10

jasoninsd, those are amazing!!! I have finished 1 (one!) Obsidian cab in my entire time with this hobby, and it looked nothing like that! Those are shaped perfectly and have a beautiful shine.

Beautiful, my friend. I'm going with the Mexican Royal Velvet Obsidian as my favorite, too. Never even heard of that. They're all great cabs with fantastic shine, however...bravo!

Yeah those are really nice. Once a person can get the steps for obsidian figured out, it is a beautiful and largely fracture-free material. Those are money. Great job.

jasoninsd, those are amazing!!! I have finished 1 (one!) Obsidian cab in my entire time with this hobby, and it looked nothing like that! Those are shaped perfectly and have a beautiful shine. Thanks Perk! I'm surprised that each of these cabs took around 40 minutes to complete (give or take)...I was kind of dinking around while doing them. I'm just going to quit now, enjoy my collection, and quit trying to play catchup lol. So many talented people on this site. That Mexican Royal Velvet Obsidian is f*ng nuts! Thanks Chad! Let me say when I first started this about a year ago, I was VERY intimidated by what I saw other people posting. I've been very lucky to have been able to invest a LOT of time cabbing this last year...more time than most. And using this new cabbing machine has helped tremendously. I will agree that MRVO is freaking amazing! Beautiful, my friend. I'm going with the Mexican Royal Velvet Obsidian as my favorite, too. Never even heard of that. They're all great cabs with fantastic shine, however...bravo! Thanks Mike! I hadn't heard of the MRVO before my sister plopped a box down in front of me last summer when she came home for a visit. It was definitely a nice surprise! Yeah those are really nice. Once a person can get the steps for obsidian figured out, it is a beautiful and largely fracture-free material. Those are money. Great job. Thanks Evan! I was looking at some Snowflake Obsidian earlier today and saw some fractures I hadn't seen before. I'm going to have to...crap...I hate to say it...make freeforms out of them! LOL Right?!? LOL I keep coming back to that picture and drooling! LOL I'm tagging Fossilman and MsAli since this thread is Obsidian related.

Gorgeous obsidians, Jason! Of course the Velvet takes the cake in this group, but they are all beautiful. Just an FYI, sometimes the Mexican is just called Velvet or Peacock obsidian if you're ever doing searches for it. It's not as available as it used to be.

LOL - I'll have you know I've got another couple shapes coming up that I've never done! (And I'll post pics, whether I screw them up or not! LOL) Gorgeous obsidians, Jason! It's not as available as it used to be. Thanks Robin! Thanks for letting me know about the other names! I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for this...although I know the price is rather steep. I got it from my sister...so the price was just right for me! LOL I saw it had been listed as "rare"...but I see that same wording for Prairie Agates! LOL I've most often seen it as velvet obsidian. Thanks Tela!

Always great to view your work, Jason. I haven't tried Cabs yet and wonder about the flat lap problem for the Mexican Royal Velvet Obsidian. Can you explain the trouble you encountered? I'm getting the bug to try cabbing and want to keep learning. Thanks again for showing your work...beautiful. Terry

The issue I was having has to be related to the way the disks weren't broken in sufficiently to remove...or more accurately stop creating scratches in the Obsidian. Here's the "frustrated" thread I started about it. There was some great information that came out of it...or at least I thought there was. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/96030/obsidian-get-feeling-frustrated

I wish that were me still! If I tried any one of those moves, I'd throw my back out and I wouldn't be able to walk for weeks!
