This is the exact site to hunt. I scored heavily at the small island with the yellow pin at low water(site is dammed into a lake). A small jon boat with a 6hp motor will be used. Or kayak. One mile up or downstream from the bridge along shores and islands will hold many artifacts. These found on the small island years ago. Erosion should expose a new crop. different lighting Old maps like this mound location map assist in finding higher population densities(ancient cities). I'll be collecting at the center line of north Alabama at a group of mounds located just above the middle of the word Tennessee.

Nice haul jamesp and good luck on your upcoming expedition. That looks like some tough chert they had to work. Almost all of the points have a raw look, only two or three may be heat treated.

Going into Alabamy, are we? I have memories from when I lived there of going to an old car show down on the Refuge. Probably at the Sportsmans Park on your map. Still have a couple photos of the vintage cars, like Rolls Royces. Beautiful paint jobs, some with pinstriping. Those things must have weighed a ton, they were built like tanks!
Good luck on your journey, find lots of cool stuff!

Good luck on your journey, find lots of cool stuff! Dude I have been hibernating too long. And too much over the past few years. Must be aging desires lol. Time to get up and move around. Recharge that adventuresome spirit which seems to be getting harder and harder to find. It is strange that I have the time and means to adventure like never in my life and I am letting it pass by. After 50 years of non-stop go go go may have cooked my interest... I know this was your old stomping grounds for a year of your life. Had to be night/day culture shock. Alabama has to be a lot more layed back than S Cali, got to be. It still has it's share of crazies though. Lots of talented car restoration folks out that way. Alabama has a very low population density. Natural resources like collectable rocks and artifacts are rarely picked over there.

This is awesome! When are you planning on going and are tag-alongs allowed? lol It's been about 15 years since collecting at this spot saxplayer. I need a stag trip to get my groove back. Next time others are welcome. Are you close by that location ? Oh, and 10 years since running the shallow water long drive boat. I freshened the engine with a new carb and replaced cables and other short lived items on it end of last year. She's ready for action. Lot's of deep shallow coves and creek inlets within 5 miles of site. They pull the lake down 4 feet from Nov to March for some reason. At that point in the long Lake Wheeler 4' draw down exposes 100 of acres of old fields, Islands and flat hill tops that once were occupied by Native man because they overlooked the Elk River.

It is some tough chert Rick. I wouldn't know how it looks heat treated. It might be Fort Payne. Upstream 40 miles is the source of Horse Creek. To the east 40 miles is the source of Paint Rock. I had found chips of both at that location. For some reason the Elk River points are longer than average. But what is so unusual about some of them is the use of oblique-parallel flaking of which I am sure you are aware. I have more of these points, some are oblique-parallel and of course some broken ones. None on the photo above. This example from Wyoming. Wondering how this method was passed along/originated...is it easy to do ? In some cases it appears they fired the flake in a curve across the entire width. Insane. Elk River style(not mine but I found heart breakers this length+).

jamesp - If you decide you want to do this in an inflatable raft instead of a fairly safe jon boat, let me know. I can give you a whole long list of what NOT to dos! LOL I look forward to seeing the spoils from this trip! It sounds like a good "mental recharge" type of adventure!

WE, sir, are going to do a float trip together at some point. I'm bringing the boat. 🤪 About a mile downstream on a 6 mile fairly aggressive whitewater trip me and few friends floated over a steel surveyor pin sledged into granite with sharp edges. It didn't puncture the raft, it put a 5 foot slash down the floor and both air compartments. brybry - we were on the Dog River SW of Atlanta, put in at Hwy 5. After a .5 to .75" rain it is a wild ride. You guys get photos

saxplayer brybry You guys are welcome to meet me there on future trips. Best if we all bought kayaks to maintain reliability and threat of breakdowns.

brybry saxplayerWhen going arrowhead hunting there is always a risk that mud or sand has covered up the collecting areas due to floods or sediment deposits from upstream construction. Or in this case the TVA turned the gates off to the dam and covered the gravel shore with water. Best way is to let me go ahead and confirm conditions. I usually stay 2 to 4 nights in a hotel in Athens. So I will be there. Best to reserve hotel in advance according to my communications yesterday. There is at least 4 hotels that have outside entry to room for storing your stuff easily if you have concerns about theft. Small town w/cheap hotels. And hopefully others have not been picking the artifacts up. Artifact hunting has become popular. The beauty of the Tennessee River is that it is was heavily occupied and has mega sites to collect. Many miles of shoreline and islands.

Awesome display! Can't wait to see what you get next time. Really like the light in pic #2 and gotta say that one "awl" or piercing tool is extremely cool! I've found a few drills over the years but nothing like that curved pointed piece.

I've found a few drills over the years but nothing like that curved pointed piece. Thanks Mel, don't come across many awls. Trip might be in jeopardy due to heavy rain. The Tennessee River valley had a dang 3+ inches of rain on the 23rd. The Elk River above the reservoir hit 40,000 cubic feet per second, a record flow for at least the past 12 months. Meaning all the feeder rivers are bloated. Fingers crossed they keep the dam wide open at 193,000 cu ft sec to bring level back down by next week. Low is 551, full pool 556. A large raindrop rain slammed the exposed river bars and shorelines when at low water of 551 which will darn sure wash a lot of the muck off the gravel exposing artifacts. They pull the lake down to ave. 551 Nov. to April 1 meaning the gravel bars have been rinsed by rain for 5 months. Add this unusual winter monsoon and the collecting should be el primo. Insane warm weather of 65F everyday in Feb, crazy. About 20 years ago me and wife got into Athens,Al. and rented hotel. It rained 6 inches that night. Next morning mature trees and logs were rushing down the river close enough to jump one to the other. Turned around and went 6 hours back home.
