I bought a used Dremel at Goodwill today, and was wondering what nova point grit sizes to get to get for carvings. I am figuring that I'll use 100 grit sintered bits for roughing them out. I think medium bullet nova's would work for me but was wondering what sizes of grit to use. Thank you in advance! -Nicholas

I’d go for a much more aggressive burr with regards to shaping and removal of substantial amounts of rock. Thank you for the tip. Maybe 80? I'm kinda clueless on the following grits though.

Perk, you're probably going to want to rough your carvings in with something like 60 grit burs. Then I might go to a 100 to smooth them out a bit and then use the regular sequence in the Nova points that you would on wheel, i.e., 80, 220, 280, 600. From there I would switch to felt points with diamond paste (or diamond bort and extender) to finish up with the pre-polish and polish. Remember, on the felt points you will need one for each grit size and need to keep them separated to avoid cross contamination.

I figured cabbing grits translated to carving somehow, but I wasn't sure. It would make it a lot cheaper for me to use paste rather than a ton of the points. Thank you so much for taking the time to write that all out, I really appreciate it.

perkins17What’s your plans Nicholas?! You got me curious! I'm planning on drilling some cabs and maybe selling them, and carving a few things like what's in this thread: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/91280/recentish-carvingsI probably won't make them as good as this, but I'll work on it. Maybe see about some 3D crosses like what's on a rosary. We'll see how I do. I'm hoping I don't kill anyone or anything in the process though!

perkins17Thats really cool Nicholas! I’ll be looking forward to seeing what you do! I also got a dremel recently and some bits to try using it to make some cabs as well as trying to carve some things.

I can't wait to see what you turn out as well. Cabbing is seriously addictive.

perkins17Thanks Nicholas! I think I will enjoy it. I think hounding and tumbling will always be my favorite but I want to give it all a go and enjoy the most I can.
