I was just at the rock club and I was reading some magazines. There was a tutorial for a crysocolla pendant and to flatten the back of the stone, it said to use the 180 lap and that it would take approx. 20 mins.!
After reading that, I have slowed down on my lap and i make sure that I have a totally flat surface coming off my 100 grit. I noticed if I rushed that the back was not completely flat. I used to work in seconds but now I work in minutes and I have much better results.

I hear you Curt. I have a couple of chunks of that stuff. The four times I have tried all turned out like you described. It looks like that cab came out really nice.

Here is a tip for using super glue.
Make sure the applicator tip never contacts the work at all. Crazy glue cures on contact and any contact made at the tip will start a curing process that will clog the tip every time.

I finish all my backs flat and polished. I sell and I just do it that way so I don't have to ask if they want the back done or not. If I make stuff just for me, I might not fully polish a bezel set cab.
