Thank you for the grit measurements. I'll start with a cup of 60/90 and if needed, add more. I still need to get 12 lbs of rough together for my first batch. I'll be sure to let you all know if any problems arise but, I think it'll be fine.
Thank you, Michael

Thanks John! I finish with a vibe too so I was just looking for the rough grind measurements.
Time to get tumbling!
Thanks, Michael

Hi All, Just wanted to share my find! I recently had a tumbler (Lortone 3A) motor crap out, so I posted on Craigslist in the wanted category for a tumbler. I had one reply back and boy did I luck out. He had a Lortone QT12, 33B, several canisters of grit, extra barrel, and lots of rocks that he no longer wanted (he got a new hobby). He was glad to see them go to a new home and to someone who would put them to good use! So, who knows how much git I need to run this big ol tumbler?!? I've only ever run 3lb barrels before. Thanks, Michael

Hi All,
I'm curious if anyone has ever done the math to figure out just how much a pound of tumbled rock costs to produce? I did some searching of the board and didn't come up with much. Did find a comment where someone figured out how much the electric cost per month to run their tumbler. So, does anyone know?
Thanks, Michael

Well, she had a good run. My Lortone 3A motor has given out after 20 years of service. I'm a bit torn between replacing the motor or adding a new DIY tumbler to my shop. I found the replacement motor on RockShed for $24... what do ya'all think? Should I fix it up or build a whole new one that can tumble more weight?
Thanks, Michael

Is the Banded Dolomite actually Alibates from Texas? Great rock and thanks for sharing! Michael

Yup, you can skip the coarse step but, you'll want to run them in a 120/220 stage.

Great job with them! Nice polish too! Collecting and polishing rocks is certainly a little more special than buying and polishing them :-)

Glad I could give you some insight into the mystery rock. Because of the nature of flintknapping, you could only make one large spear out of it or break it up to make a few small ones. It will take a great polish if you decide to slab it. Around a 1/4 inch it will have a dark amber color and as it gets thinner it will get lighter and more translucent.
Some pieces have more fossils in them than others. You'll see them as long white bands; some will be completely replaced and others may be a little chalky.

That is Knife River Flint from N. Dakota, it is a form of petrified peat so... not really wood. You'll see some neat cattail fossils in it. It is highly valued for flintknapping. A piece that size (if solid) is fairly rare. I'd be happy to chip it into a spear :-)

Soak them in nail polish remover over night. You can take off the super glue in one piece by sliding a razor blade under it.
