OK, nearly done with the Chinese one. Needs another run at polish, and baring any accidents with the opal tusks tomorrow it should be ready. nearly there chinese nephrite with opal tusks by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Thinking of giving it the opal tusks temporarily for challenge purpose, but then eventually buy some silver wire and fashion tusks for both the nephrite and the Australian one too.

I guess you'll be gluing the tusks? What kind will you use? Superglue has been kind to me.....

Easy part is done, now to sanding and polish. Kainzer Kurt by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr tricky to get to the left onset of the trunk, so not done yet Kainzer Kurt by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Looks great as such, but I worry that the cuts might be too shallow to give definition to a polished piece. Might just leave the head and trunk unpolished after cleaning up. Legs and foot will be done in a couple of days. Next weekend then the tusks. I'm thinking Qrrums moonstone for the black one, and dont knoiw yet what to use for the Chinese nephrite to stand out. Maybe some leftover black jade, but that thing is hard to polish as it is so danged small.

Its rare to have the agate worked into a pietersite cab, and looks fabulous. Your wrap as usual complements the stone perfectly.

90 grit sounds very rough to start sanding, never mind polish. I use 200 grit burrs and then switch usually to a succession of 400, 600, 1200 and 2000 grit paper before starting to polish. For polish I use 14K and 50K on cloth and/or felt (burrs).
There are lots of methods, and it often depends on the material worked on. Give us some pictures as to where you are, and I'm sure we can talk you through, if needed step by step.

Nice patterns you got there. Gotta get back into Montana Agates. Have not done any in a while.

Hmmmm, have been following the subject for years now, and scratching my head...... You folks invest a lot in your equipment, plus cleaners, etc.... Yet problems seem to turn up rather regularly. I find a lot of people are far beyond annoyed, and rightfully so. While hacking is a problem over here too, and is a worldwide nuisance, I have never had any problems with store-bought products, normal updates as provided by programs that I run, and a simple free version of AVG. Do I have bugs in my system, certainly, but nothing too worrying that I would have noticed, and thus far every time I think something is going on, a simple cleanup (usually once a month) means everything is back to normal. But in case something happens, 95% of everything is backed up on an external hard-drive (kept offline) at any time. Maybe I'm just lucky thus far, but......

Blast from the past. Thank you Dave.
If any tread needs restoring pictures, let me know, I do have most on the computer. Not fair for you guys to do all the work.
Thanks again, Kurt

The use of the lighter section of the Chinese nephrite seems to allow a greater depth to the work(s)... intriguing... I am enjoying watching each piece develop. Thank you! Glenn Additional depth is gained mostly due to the fact that its a heel...

Hard to choose a favorite, but to me, the exotic jasper stands out for its colour and immaculate shape.

Early release from school today allowed for a little session to start cutting the elephants. Australian jade needs recessing lower parts of the ears and then find a way to optically fit onset of tusks. I think, overall shape of ears and head should be ok for the time being. Australian Jade rough cut by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr The Chinese nephrite is a bit more trickier. Trying to use the red/orange tone from the rind. So started testing viability on the ears. Will have to thin it out, but again, I think it could work. Chinese Nephrite rough cut by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Thanks for looking, Kurt

After months without inspiration to start anything new, 2018 seems to start well. Just takes a bit as I cut outdoors and in the moment the weather is certainly not inviting. Somehow around New Year, I got Elephant into my mind and it stuck with me for a few days, so I started a freehand piece just to see where it would go. ppeleph 1 plu 2 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr One kept breaking off, but the Slag from England held up. ppbest by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr No tusks yet. Will wait for that till the next two catch up. Up next, a bit better planed (lets see if that helps). One in Chinese nephrite, where I hope the rind will give me a two-tone effect, and an Australian Black Jade (a material that has been kind to me). Jade project by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Thats as far as I got thus far, dodging rain and (for us here) very cold weather (mid to upper 30's). Yes, I know, a lot of you currently endure much lower temps, BUT, we are supposed to be in the tropics here....... Remain with best regards, Kurt

Thanks Kurt kk . I took mine out to 5000-grit also but did not realize as good a polish shine as you got. I guess I should have buffed it better. Maybe there are differences in the material. I did nothing after the sanding, as I'm afraid I would burn up the surface with my Foredome. I got a foot-pedal somewhere, but have never used it. But come to think of it; I did give it a good rub-down on my jeans before taking pictures.

kk - How did you put such a nice polish on the Amber#2 stone? 400, 1200, 2000, 3000, 5000 grit paper. Works best for me. As material is soft, it does not take a long while to wear it down.

Thank you all for the nice feedback. You really did find the hidden dolphin in the rough. Did not see it in the rough, until I freed the crystal parts from all the other stuff Thats the way I got it. The rough shown above is just was left after removing matrix and most fractured parts. dolphin rough by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr
