not to second guess you Mel because I am a novice compared to your experience but wouldn't the quality carnelian be more translucent ranging towards transparent? this looks more like a flint or chert type even before cooking. I stand to be corrected because all I have to reference is the way I describe it. :<)

another cab; this one pretty large, from another varient of the same chalcedony(agate) material and from the same site in s. central BC. The colours here are pretty accurate the feathers are actually filled fractures that have a yellowish filler. Attachments:

aw what the heck, one more pic and that's it. most of the microfractures are filled but some of the larger ones even though they will stay together in sawing, I drop the stone on the bench to see where it will break because they don't go all the way through sometimes. I haven't tried epoxy filling any to save the large slabs but I think I will at some point if I want a big slab, this peice is 4 1/2 inches and the camera just won't capture the amazing brightness and varieties in the colours Attachments:

I agree with Mel that it is probably some form of chalcedony, I find a lot of the same type of material here in central BC but it doesn't get treated so gently by the rivers so is more angular but because it is so tough it gets rounded off on the exposed surfaces and polished by the sand and debris in flood stages. All the quartz gets broken down to gravel as it fractures so readily because of its large crystal structure.

thanks Ginge I don't want to load the site up with pictures but you should see the ones I cut yesterday; unbelievable colours and patterns in the morrisonite looking material ao I cut some 3/16 in slices tonight so you can see the translucency and see it is really a chalcedony type material. I put the pyramid together with grout I made from epoxy and the grinding dust after it dried out. It turned out really well considering it was all done by eye. the stuff is really hard to grind too because there is chalcedony mixed in there too; I get the occasional patch of the BC Blue even in the red.

Daniel is dead on. This guy Kris makes promises, and the only ones he keeps are when he needs to send rocks. In my experience, once they are sent, never will another promise be kept. He is a self-proclaimed huckster. His words not mine. I have never had a bad deal with anyone in the lapidary industry save Kris. The fact he publicly announces he will contact me about my transaction, seemingly in the essence of resolution, but fails to keep that promise speaks volumes. It means to me he never meant to follow thru and his goal was to make all readers think "oh, it's over now". My post was meant to illustrate that was not the truth. He just lies over lies. Some folks still want to buy from a person of that character. That's perfectly fine with me. But there are a constant flow of newbies and keeping these things open allows them to be informed. Don't worry, if you end up needing to complain, he is not likely to threaten lawsuit as he did with me. Nothing would please me more than my being able to say it's resolved, but that is out of my control. your deal maybe going bad doesn't give you the right to slander other people that have nothing but good things to say about the vendor and his goods; now I start to question your character.

itsandbits: *L* Rosie the hawk was so named because she was a red phase red tail hawk. Never heard her make a sound the whole time I worked with her ( unlike Rosie OD's, horrible constant screeching) and Unlike Rosie OD, the hawk was pretty and not annoying at all *L*....Mel couldn't help it Mel; it was just too funny:<)

thanks; I just looked at the picture and it is one from the beginning of finishing with a 320 diamond lap finish and a quick coat of the sweat off my brow, or skin oil if you want to gross the girls out:<) i keep forgetting to put measurements in; it is to the same porportions as most of the pyramids round the world and stands about 2.5 inches

*L* The Rosie O Donnel Oprah comment made me squirt my diet coke out my nose. I can't think of a human being on earth that annoys me more than ole Rosie and her screeching voice. Oh, let me correct that. I'm pretty sick of hearing the Prez talk every time on turn on my TV too *L*..Mel oh come on Mel; what's that I see in your avatar? wait for it; a cute little squawking bird called ----- :<)))

I'm still processing the rock from my last fall hounding on a new river and the variety of chalcedony colours and patterns seems to be neverending. the largest peices are about 3x4 in. I am finding some nice blue which for want of better names to call it is "BC BLUE" and the range of colours goes from black through the greens and greys to a range of other colours and combinations. some of it is silified sedimentary deposites altered by subduction and volcanic activity, and all of it seems to be altered in some way by fracturing and healing, pressure/temperature variations, and silification at some point. I only managed to scale it down to 27 pounds before it went to Canada. yes, it was a great 27 lbs, and I tried to get it worked down but when I weighed it for sending it was right back up there at 27lbs.

capped, the value of opal is usually 10% of what it would be for a solid stone. Not to take you away from the site but you can get some idea by going to the OA site and comparing to whats there.
