Ok, I'm back from Utah, will compile the results and decide which stones to polish (or might just polish them all) and get cracking on this. Thanks for being so patient!

Love that Orpheous Agate, and you did a great job with the Vistaite - beautiful composition with the pattern. You are definitely doing something right in the polish department too!

Art supply stores also have templates, but they tend to be fairly regular and geometric shapes. Welcome to the addiction club Fossilman!

I like it. Not super flashy, but a whole bunch of them in a row on a link bracelet would be perfect. I also like that the pattern is small enough scale to work well with all sizes of cabs.

Yup, now you're on the right track. I do the drop test on mine. I drop onto wood floor from about 2-3 feet (not for a large slab, more for a slabette) before marking my cutting lines for the preforms. Might as well let the cab be the shape it wants to be.

Too funny Sabre52! melhill1659, I take my classes at a local class given by a retired engineer who knows jewelry making. It's held in an adult school that has mainly citizenship classes in the evenings. They're only silversmithing classes though, no lapidary. I take a couple sessions a year - making it to a 6pm-9pm Monday/Wednesday class after work for 4 weeks in a row is tough. I've been wanting to learn hinges for a long time though. We learned a WAY easier method than most of the online videos show - will describe that when I get further into the project. The benefit of the teacher being an engineer! That's awesome!! We don't have anything like that close to me. You are an excellent student!!!! Learn a lot then SHARE 😂 Yup, you have to share (it helps you learn better too!)

Love them all. I like the delicate colors on the lace. Nice framing on the bone, I like that the pattern varies over the surface of the cab.

Haha, yeah jamesp, especially with brecciated jaspers, where the pattern changes a lot from the preform to the cab. You get those white spots in random places that were more artistically placed on the preform itself. But that's the game!

Search for a treatise written by Carleton back in the day. He wrote a magnificent opus on cutting labradorite. It's not too hard though. You don't have to cut it thick if it's good material. Just stand with the sun shining over your shoulder onto the rock. Rotate it every which way until you get best flash (even if that's a corner). Draw (literally) an X there. Then, pretend the X is smack on the end of a loaf of bread and cut off the first slice of bread. Then, repeat the process of orientation (you can't just slab the whole rock assuming the flash continues through it). Sometimes the angle of best flash changes.

They'll all be oriented vertically right next to each otehr, if that affects your recommendations. Voting will stay open for a good while, I'm going on a trip and can't work on it next weekend. Interesting the different thoughts here! Thanks!

Okay, here we go, time for audience participation! Including the last batch, I now have 9 cabs that I like pretty much. Some more than others. These are finished through the 1200 wheel. 2 of them through the 3000 wheel. I'll take the winners to 14,000 probably. I already eliminated a bunch that I didn't like. You get to help me decide which 7 make the cut for the bracelet - 2 are getting voted off! Don't go by shape - I can reshape them pretty easily if they look too fat or too thin when they're lined up. So why don't you give me the two you think should get the ax! I'll veto of course if I don't agree, but interested in what you think. Here's the group shot: Number them like this: Closeups: #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 #7 #8 #9

Those are awesome! My favorite is the red plume, or maybe the tiffany, but I have to know, what the heck is Tidgilite? Oh nevermind, I was spelling it wrong in google. Cool stuff!

Cool Mel. First one looks like it couldn't decide what type to be and got a bit of everything in there.
