Hi guys, just wondering if anyone can point in the right directions. I'm looking to drill some of my stones, agates, jasper and the like. Where in the UK is the best place to get some, don't want to spend loads as i'm still new to this and don't want to bugger things up. Probably 1mm or slightly smaller, maybe up to 1.5mm Many thanks in advance Tiger

Hi guys, just wondering is anyone knew to a good guide book for the uk. I can get world books but would like one that tells you where you might find things, not just this is what it looks like and how it was formed. I could do with one that allows me to visit and area and have a rough idea what i might be lucky enough to find there. many thanks

Thanks very much Henry, 'Toffee' was found at Brancaster on the Norfolk coast. I'm now using cerium oxide. I was using Pumice but it didn't seem to be working and I was kindly sent a sample of cerium oxide, it's wonderful stuff.

Right, don't get too excited, it's only a few stones, and my picture taking is rubbish, got to build me one of those light boxes, been reading the heads up on how to take a photo lol. Anyway these guys have such a wonderful shine, just couldn't get it in the pic without loads of light reflecting. I am gong to try some under the magnifier later as the light is lovely and white plus i won't need the close up. I would apreciate any id's on these rocks as I have no idea, found them on the beach basically in two different locations, but just loved the look of them. Group photo I call this toffee lol otherside thanks for looking

Hi everyone, been tumbling away quietly, some polishing up nice and I promise to post pics soon. I have yet some more daft newbie questions and would be grateful for any help.
1/ Now I have the right grit for polishing thanks to ianT, I have been reading up on this and see the sugestion of using a small amount of wall paper paste to slightly thicken the mix as to prevent the rocks from crashing into each other. Is this OK? What other things could be used?
2/ further reading about 'burnishing' led me to purchase some Borax. I only have read one ref to the amount to use, being 2 tablespoons for a 3lb barrel, so that's half the amount for my little barrels. is this correct? and should it be used on it's owe to clean between grits? with grits? and again after polishing has been suggested but as above, would this not cause problems with rocks crashing together without some sort of thickener?
3/ lastly (thank goodness I hear you cry) I have been looking into getting some of those little plastic beads for adding to a mix to fill in the little gaps. how much should I use for a 1 1/5lb barrel? as I don't want to order too little.
Many thanks again in advance for your kindness
Tiger

thanks starguy, hopefully they will be soon out. I'm being more selective of what I use, putting to one side anything with big holes, now I have a choice. First lot was just to see what happens. I have just started some onyx, not really sure if it will work tbh.

thought I would continue on this thread rather than starting a new one so hope it gets seen. My barrels are 1.5lb. Is this a weight for an empty barrel or for total weight when full? I really didn't want to over load the motor. Also I have seen a lot of mention about burnishing, heads up would be great. and finally, what would you guys recommend for 'thickening' for finer and polish stages? I have seen mention plastic beads and wall paper paste? many thanks again
