I have a hopper that looks pretty similar to these from a lapidaryist's estate. Never have come across anything that looked similar, but these pics popped up on an old auction page...
the hopper is suspended by four springs on top, on the bottom is a shaft with two bearings, between the bearings, two counterweights and a pulley. Looks like the drive pully is directly below a ways. Wondering if this model was a DIY in a magazine a while ago or such?

Slight chance, but
Anyone have an old metal Lortone ts-8 version trim saw that rusted out but still have the table top they want to part with?
Thanks.

Thanks for that, interesting reading.... My actual first thought when I chipped a pc open that this might be Morrisonite... There aren't any really large pcs, but there were still some remnants of Bruneau & Trent floating around at that sale ( I should go fight the crowds sometime, but hate that) ... no one wanted a bucket of old rusty rocks I'll have to cut some more sometime.

Definitely Blue Mountain... The long one above it to the left looks like Tahoma frog skin. yes on the frogskin.. this was kinda a kitchen sink, clear the deck, empty the bin, batch.
So has the Blue Mountain stuff been mined for a long time?( I know the claim recently changed hands and it was getting worked more... ) This estate had a lot of old stuff, I was figuring these were probably collected in the 70's give or take... amygdule

Brazilians are hard to hate, as over popular as they seem, Cut a few 'baby Brazillians in half' and this one was a pleasant surprise out of the tumbler... yeah, pleasant but boring, but the B side is pretty nifty! Bonus points if anyone can identify the main green rock, think it's some sort of eastern Oregon Jasper... Estate sale find in an old bucket - old as in rusty metal 5 gallon bucket (before the days of plastic) full of water. All of the pcs have a pleasant rusty patina letting everyone else pass them up... Some lighter areas but sorta orby type of jasper green/cream colored maybe a slight hint of blue?

It had probably been a good dozen years or so since I had tried to fully tumble obsidian using just a rotary. The most common tumbler out there is a 3 pound rotary so I recently challenged myself to see if it were possible to come close to my lot-o results using nothing but a 3 pound lortone barrel. I think the end result was acceptable but the amount of time and grit were off the charts just as I expected. My normal method for obsidian is to do the stage one grind in a rotary for as long as needed then about 10 total days in the lot-o. These rocks spent 90 days in the rotary in the various stages after stage one. So times longer and easily 6 times more grit and polish used. Chuck
Soo much obsidian around here, I get asked this often, after all it starts out pretty shiny.... I usually tell folks to start with something easier. Any chance you could post/sticky/store a side by side of the two recipes? (or if you have just point me in the right direction)
Thanks
btw, very pleasing tumbles!

If you compare photos you'll see the pickup models and colors are different. That's because I often rent a truck instead of using my own.
I have a nephew in the rental business so I get good deals and it preserves my Titan.
And yes, it's fun to torment my RTHling pals with photos.
I've never rented a truck before for this sort of outing... Without the family connection, how concerned are they about scrapes/scratches etc ? Always seems contradictory in my mind when brand new trucks are doing 5mph here on the backroads - what's the point?
Tormented indeed, might have to go turd rustling...

TURD TUESDAY
are all of those really from one outing?! Looks like work, even if the truck were right next to all of them!

We already know the real winner is oregon , who is rehoming all of these rocks!
yep, had to make room for today's outing. Though I got a "Your item was delivered to the garage or an alternate location" message so mine must have caught the express flight.

Wow, oregon ! Thank you so much!! Sounds like an awesome mix! I don’t want to unilaterally change the rules mid-contest, so I will let the folks guessing have a say in whether to add that to the total. Just picking out of the bins while standing there... Larger than a small flat rate, smaller than medium.

whooo hoo, playing my friend's slot machine last week paid off, had 7's on my mind... thx... I'll have to get a box out your way in return. Not sure if you want to add it to your total, but sent a pkg... ( I was traveling during the actual auction time) so my minor contribution to the effort. Few local jasper/agates (one new site I haven't cut yet), local pet wood, thundereggs, obsidian, snakeskin, couple carnelians, Maury Mtn, and I think a Brazillian hitched a ride... I'll let you decide whether it gets added to the contest total
