You do more before leaving for work than I have planned all day! Okay... maybe more than I have planned for the rest of the week. I cleaned out 2 tumblers and have been monitoring a couple rock chunks running on a vibrating lap and thought I was doing well. *sigh* Looking forward to seeing the rest of the process. Think I need a nap after reading of your barrel build. I told my new boss a couple months ago that I go to work to rest so stop giving me so much work. I don't think he took me seriously.

ok here goes when I built my last set of barrels I built 2 eight inch pvc 8 inch long barrels. but the shafts I scrounged free were to short so I ended up cutting 2 inches off 1 leaving me with 1 eight inch long and 1 six inch. this morning I got around to gathering up and prepping the stuff for my 2 seven inch barrels. I first cut off an end square. I used to have nice leather wrap arounds for marking pipe but they got wet and warped. so I use a 6x48 belt sander belt to make a mark around the pipe with a sharpie. then cut around with a handsaw (hacksaw handsaw doesn't matter) run saw back and forth a couple times then spin pipe a little. repeat until your through. with 1 end nice and straight I put that end against the rip fence on table saw feed in till cut through then spin pipe to speed up cutting. but could be done all by hand. some cutoff pieces of uhmw plastic. pvc sheet would work I imagine just about any sheet of plastic or even lexan would work. I use uhmw cause when we cut the sheets for lining chutes your always left with big triangular chunks of scrap. so its free. even wood would work in researching tumblers I saw someone in a poor country using huge wooden drums. get the old hot glue gun out. glue sheet to pvc pipe. doesn't have to be a perfect glue job its coming back apart later. router bit with roller bearing guide. run around pipe nice round pvc endcap. dremel with circle cutter attachment and spiral cutting bit. I used my rotozip last time but my circle cutting jig was broken and ghetto repared. wife just bought me the dremel 4000 and drill press workstation so I decided to use that this time. glad I did came out nicer. nice 6 inch round opening all the parts for building 2 eight inch pvc barrels 7 inches long. that's as far as I got this morning before I leave for work. to be continued.

The only reason I bought 10 pounds of AO 22 was because I did not believe I was getting such good polish using AO 80. Thought I would take it to the extreme. I'm telling you, you could get AO 2(rough +BB size AO) and it would do the exact same thing. Crazy. Aluminum oxide and silicon carbide are both in fact ceramics. Silicon carbide noted for being brittle. Aluminum oxide noted for being tough. Silicon carbide breaks into pieces. Aluminum oxide does not break, it rounds. If you look at AO 500 slurry after it has been in a vibe for 3 days you will find AO 500 in the slurry(under a microscope). But rounded to almost balls. It does not go away unless run a very long time. For the same reason aluminum oxide ceramic media lasts for a long time. It is Mohs 9. I bought 10 lbs myself before realizing that the vibe would use so little.

I asked myself this same question after jamesp said something along the lines of half of the rocks improving in polish. which tells me that the ao pretty much broke down that far. just to be safe I'm letting the batch I'm doing now go 6 or 7 days in the vibe with the ao. then a good thorough cleanout and a day or 2 in polish will see how they come out.

So, I made an adapter, accessory, attachment, what ever you want to call it for my LF-10 to work as a vibe tumbler. Everything went together and works like I envisioned it would. The adapter in the lap; The tub: All together: And running: Question I have is why isn;t there more mixing? I would have expected things to turn over but they don't. Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions welcomed. Thanks. try filling it fuller almost to the top see what happens

So earlier tonight jeannie sends me to the store for a gallon of milk. As an afterthought she says "if they have eggs, get six". So, when i got back she saw my purchase. She asks "why the hell do you have six gallons of milk?" To which i answered.... "They had eggs...." bad joke. whens the last time you saw a package of 6 eggs? should have been 12 gallons of milk lol.

just got some ao 80 in today. reading some older posts doing research. does it make any difference if you leave in the ao 80 longer? and if it breaks down to almost the polish grit maybe a separate polish bowl wont be needed?

you could buy a vacuum pump from hf www.harborfreight.com/25-cfm-vacuum-pump-61245.htmlyears ago I used a refrigerator compressor pump to build a power brake bleeder. they make great vacuum pumps. quiet and they are easy to find. ac unit compressors should work as well.

If you have an air compressor you can get a venturi vacuum pump with no moving parts, lasts forever, unlike cheap hand pump brake bleeders. If you don't have a compressor, never mind... old ac or refrigeration compressors make good vacuum pumps.

I tumble lots of small slabettes, but 4" is the most my vibe can handle. Takes an extra-long time to polish those big flat faces, ten days in polish and it still wasn't perfect. Read somewhere that a lady was doing a full barrel of slabs. Simply stack them, separate them with smalls, and let them roll! I've never done this, but would like to if I ever get a monster vibe that can finish them. Edges get most of the grinding action, so no real need to pre-grind, though it certainly helps to grind off ugly bits and the worst concavities, knife-edges, or fractures. goes against what ive heard. when running lots of flats the edges don't wear well. I haven't run any slabs but can tell you the cut rocks usually end up concaving on the flat cut face.

ohh man here I been buying boxes full all the while this garagerocker could have just sent me some free ones??? just kidding Ha!!! Imagine that, a guy in Kentucky, the land of limestone, sending tumbling material to a guy in Texas, rock hounding heaven!? Doesn't seem right, does it? richardh must have said all the right things. Truthfully, he was heading in the right direction and I knew he'd get it, he just needed some proven materials to see promising results. That sort of thing happens a lot around here. It's not coordinated, expected or even publicized, it's just the right thing to do. Whether it's materials or knowledge, they are both freely given to newcomers so they can advance in their new hobby. That's what is great about this collective membership. If you fell through the cracks and never got a 'welcome' package, let me know and I'll send you a batch of rough like Richard got.
I was just messin but thanks for the offer. I bought or won about 150 lbs of rough and a uv-10 in the past couple months at cheap prices on this board. great selection of rocks though. major kudos to you my fine sir. I shall not wear out your generosity and let it slide to one of the other members who is more deserving or in need.

in my opinion the non industrial barrel will not hold up for long. Maybe for just polish it may. Call The Rock Shed and talk to them about the industrial, Shawn has been great about finding a solution when out of stock.I think in the long run you will be glad you purchased the industrial. yeah 64 dollars at rockshed. everywhere else was hovering around 100 bucks.
