I'm updating the Agate Index for its 2nd edition (please see the cabochon thread for what this is) and I need images for the following agates.
Keswick Agate(Iowa), Boley Agate, Alabama Paint Agate, Hogg Creek Agates(ID), Coldwater (Iowa), good Chimney Bed agates and Mulligan Peak(AZ), some good Horse Canyon shots (CA), Del Norte Eggs(CO), Luna (NM), some Lake Balmorhea (TX), Big Diggins Agate (NM), Sowbelly Agate (CO).
Some of these I already have photos for, but I would like to augment the one or two shots I have with additional specimens. The images need to be as clear as possible as the transition from 'Pages' - my software to PDF file lowers the quality to such a point that anything blurred is magnified and stands out.
My goal is to revamp the Indexes over the Christmas school vacation, so any new photos should be entered by December 15th or so. If you miss the deadline, anything submitted will just be kept for next year. (I'm beginning to think this time of year will be my window for updates each year moving forward.)
I also am considering doing a Facebook page for the Agate Index - though I have not done one of these before - and I was wondering if there are limits to the amount of space you are given, or how many subpages could be set up - for example dividing the images by both state and by type. If you know about Facebook, can you give some advice. Thanks.
Please place photos here if you have a good one I can use!
Also see the posts I've updated in the Identification section. Please add photos you'd like to share with the world, especially if you are in an area that is not well represented in any of the agate/jasper books. Our goal with this project is the create an American database that you can use to research unknown material or discover what different locations have to offer.
Thank you for your help,
Lowell

Per request - Potato Patch Material I've only dug extensively at one place here. It was on the lip of one of the hills. The eggs I found I uncovered by digging down a few feet. I loved them. This place produced more crystal lined geodes than anywhere else I dug - including batches that looked to be filled with zeolites. I'd dig there again, but every year I'd go back and find people dug INTO the hill rather than DOWN into the proper strata. My hole would be covered with 5 to 10 extra feet of dirt. It just didn't seem worth the effort with so many other easier places to place a shovel. Still, if I want some more, I know where they are. Here's the material: And some from the Black Agate Thunderegg Mine off the Bradshaw Trail: And just for happiness and grins, here's some of the nodules you can find in the 'Corn Field' on the flats between the Cinnamon Beds and the road leading into the Middle Hauser Beds: Thanks for looking, Lowell

I'm putting together a box today for another member of RTH and shot some photos of what he is receiving. Just thought I'd drop the photos here so show the variety of material found in the Hausers. I'm hoping to get down there Christmas time for some Winter digging. All were self-dug except the polished piece. For scale - the lid these sit on is a little larger than a shoe-box. Left side: Right Side: Polished Piece: From the Classic Southern Hauser Bed location: From the Classic site - the eggs I most enjoy cutting are darker green on the outside, as they contain bluer agate in fortification patterns. From a short valley across from that site to the east: not the prettiest, but it shows the tillage lines: From just over the hill to the right of the Southern Hauser Digs. There is a place where I found a bunch of t-egg cores - mostly small - and some eggs still with matrix. The material if primarily white, but it can have stronger banding. Here is the one included: From the Middle Hauser Beds: Farther north (not the Black Agate Thunderegg mine, but on the road to the Hidden Saddle Beds) is a patch of black agate t-eggs. The interiors are not as well defined the the Bl.Ag. Tegg Mine, but the matrix is redder which contrasts well with the black interior: A solid nodule from the Cinnamon Beds: A smaller T-egg from a place near the Straw Beds: examples of pieces I've kept from over the years. This is an example of the best green skinned egg I've cut from the S. Hauser Beds: Another green skin (my nickname - not a general term) Rainey's Well: Middle Hauser: White agate cores on left side. (Other side some banded material found near the Cinnamon Bed) thanks for looking. Lowell

I've been trying to verify my id of some material as coming from Mozambique. The dealer it originates from claims it's Malawi. Now, to me, since this is dreg material and free as the dealer can't use it for cabbing or cutting, I do not care from a financial point of view, but I do care as I lay much in the way of provenance. I have material that's beautiful, but have no clue to its origin, and that limits my joy of the pieces. So I am trying to pinpoint this stuff. I believe it is Mozambique - both from Mel's information and my own research (I think from all this research, I must be gearing up for doing the 2nd edition of the Agate Index- for those who enjoyed the 1st edition. We've been given access to some great new resources). Anyway, back on topic...I PM'd Mel for some backup (and he's gone over the top in getting me information - so always a thanks to him) I figured since I had the photos, I'd drop a quick thread into the specimen bucket for those who like the research aspect of this hobby as well. Here is some of the material I was told was Malawi: Rough: Polished (by me.) And mixed: Here is some material from the same batch that to me looks much closer to traditional Malawi. I'm waiting for Mel's response to this batch of photos, so I have no other answer other than my own opinion. I took the photos in bad lighting this evening, so I apologize. Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!!!!! And to all may you get yourself a lot of your favorite pieces - either thighs! Or breast meat!! Whichever is your favorite!! And remember to share the wishbone!!! And may there be much stuffing at your house!!! Egad...that sounds so suggestive... I think I won't delete it! :nono: Okay, I'll be good... Lowell

Hey all, I haven't been around much, busy with things other than rocks and minerals, but this past weekend I displayed at the Oxnard Gem and Mineral Show. I wish I could have spent more time there but at least I got to dust off my stones and put them behind glass for people to stare at. Saw Christopher1234 there and had a nice talk. Didn't buy much - 30 pieces of grade Z dino bone for my students - 30 pieces of low grade Dryhead to give my students, an OK Black Rock Desert half, a small piece of youngite, a small parcelas agate, a cracked Bear Canyon end piece, and a tiny condor agate that is pretty much one color - black. I got the pieces cheap and will display them in my classroom for the year and then give them away. Anyway - I only had time to shoot my display, and I did a cr*ppy job of that. Still, figured I need to get my post numbers up so here goes with my display. Don't laugh. I put more time into my stones than my backdrop... Oh, and thanks to Mel, Woody, Roger, John who all have provided material in the past via trades, sales, or thank you's that showed up here. If I overlooked anybody, please forgive me. International Agate Case My horrible cut-paper title with Some South American Stuff - in the back - with Mexican in the front. The front purple pieces are apparently mislabeled. One of the dealers at the show ID's them as from the Parcelas region, though not from the Parcelas claim specifically. Closer look at the Parcelas: And why not a shot at Moctezuma row: Here's the left side of the display case: With a look at things down under: And coming back to the USA case Right side: Middle: And Left side...no wait...I don't seem to have a closeup of the right side - so Middle Again - shading more to the left! Thanks for glancing at my blurry photos...and no, you don't need to check your prescription lenses... Lowell
