yep...inexpensive microfiber cloths...i got mine at harbor freight.
yep standard grit recipe up till 500....but in my opinion you really need to add the step of 1000.
i only used the THICK-IT in 1000 and polish...it may work fine going from 500 to polish with the THICK-IT in just the polish...i did not try that myself....kev

i do not use a vibe...so just my opinion. anything that will slow down the force of impact can only be a good thing...the THICK-IT will greatly reduce impact force over just water. when the shammy cloth pieces get between the stones they are so flexible and soft they just seem to wrap around the stones...and just kind of let them roll off. something a little harder like leather may let the stone bump into it and bounce backward right into another stone....edging it again...i just basicly slowed everything way down to minimize impact and create a slippery surface with the pre polished shammy's...just my opinion ..play with it ...kev.

o.k. I'm giving up what works for me...first i would like to say there are many recipes here that do result in the same results...once you get your combinations right...and i had to play with combinations also...but hopefully i have narrowed down a little bit for others to start with...this in rotary barrels...maybe someone can work it out for vibes....used this in 1000 grit and polish. and i have to give credit where credit is due...i did not get this right... for me anyway...until after a couple of conversations with Dave (Snowdog). there is only 2 ingredients a product called THICK-IT...can be purchased at most pharmacy's...you can make it any consistancy you like in an 8 ounce cup...i should have took more notes...but i believe i started at HONEY thickness...it took about 12 ounces for a 3 lb barrel...and held it's thickness over the days of polishing...i added grit straight to the THICK-IT ...3 tablespoons during 1000...same for polish....no THICK-IT until after 500 grit. now for 2nd ingredient for...1000 and polish...this is what made the difference in my opinion. shammy rags...just like the ones you detail your car with...really coarse soft cotton rags. cut them into 1/4 by 1" strips...or longer if you like...a lot of them....mix a jar or container of your grit until dissolved...add strips and stir every so often...make the strips soak up the grit...then add the strips to the stage you are in...a minimum of half rock...half shammy....more shammy may even work better all i can say is it has giving me a polish on apache tears and obsidian that rivals anyone's...and i ain't even that good of a polisher ...anyway hope it may help 1 person ....kev.

well..came home today..and motor is fried on my old star diamond 6 lb..it's kinda old serial number 1601 ...that's a huge bummer..that's what i use for all my roughing...i now have to move to my 3 lb tumblers...that sucks because my 3 lb tumblers are dedicated to diff grits. it also sucks because i had larger rocks from the box in the 6 lb...now i have to cull them down to fit the 3 lb....makes choice more difficult. i have a question though...where in the world did this rough come from...no complaints at all ...me gots me some of everything...just asking...i got blue glass...obsidian..pre tumbled stuff..pre tumbled slabs....carnelian...banded agates....picture type stuff...all kinds of wood. a few display pieces i am keeping....like a piece of carnelian that looks like an alligator head ...and what i believe is a piece of massive quartz with large black coal looking inclusions...will get pic of carnelian alligator ...just wondering...kev.

i will say what i think it really is ...and i may be wrong. when your stuff gets that thick...it's the matrix from what you are tumbling...when it get's that thick it really needs to be discarded...just a bunch of soft stuff that your rocks kind of discarded....just my opinion . once you reach the harder stuff...thick grit should not be a big problem....once again just my opinion ..kev.

so..let me get this right....yaw like that thick slurry as shown by tkvancil in rough or not . 7 teaspoons 46/70...6 lb tumbler...3 or 4 days....rocks begin to clank....when they start clanking...i add 4 more teaspoons of 46/70...after an hour or so...no more clanking of stones...after 7 days check for fractures...from clanking that did happen....i just add more grit as before...but others may clean and just do their thing. no pics yet...just kinda rolling for now...kinda like comparing notes ...kev.

i was not going to post pics of nothing....but seems yaw wanna compare notes....im game with that ...anything to help other folks ..i just changed my 6 lb barrel....sorry just seen where yaw are doing this...so no pics of first change. i would not have a pic anyway...i just throw new grit in....will not even look for a month...really no reason to look. running 47/60 for 1 month....then 60/90 for however long...i believe shape is 50 percent of any tumble...so...i will get pics of my junk as we go ...kev.

i broke my foot in 6 places one night at work after working 20 hours...a piece came out of the press and got me....it was MY FAULT...i knew better.
i reached across a machine one day and my arm grazed a tool bit....it opened up a 6 inch gap in my fore arm...cut artery's and all....like to bleed to death....it was MY FAULT... i knew better.
i crushed three knuckles in my left hand swinging a sledge hammer driving a pin into a hole...i missed the pin...crushed my hand....MY FAULT...i knew better.
i had a large piece of steel...fly out of a machine one day...did not hurt me....but could have easily killed me....i did not have it secured proberly...MY FAULT....i knew better.
you should know better....if you actually perform chit you are not comfortable with....then it's YOUR FAULT.
i am just just an old timer...and i just think it's mostly your FAULT.....kev.
