Since Mark has asked for a poll to be created, and since the topic of a dedicated Tumbling section has been bantered-about, I figured I'd see what members' opinions are on the idea.
As long as it's a fresh section, meaning that no old topics will be moved to the new section, I doubt that Mark would have a problem with it, since it would take only a few minutes of his time to create the section. Mark, if you read this and WOULD have a problem with it, please just delete this thread and poll.
Members gave very valid reasons for wanting a Tumbling section, and it does seem appropriate since this IS "Rock Tumbling Hobby". The problem, as it stands, is that people starting-out or looking for specific information about tumbling are having to spend a lot of time searching and sifting through the various sections in order to try to find the information they need. Over time, tumbling has taken a back seat to many other aspects of "rocks", so the tumbling threads get buried and lost in the shuffle. To many, it seems that the time has come to resolve this problem. What do you think?
I decided to make this a 14 day poll, so that most folks will have their opportunity to vote, and the results will be shown after the poll has ended, so that "popular" vote will not influence YOUR vote. You can only select ONE option, but you CAN change your vote up until the time the poll ends.
PLEASE VOTE!

How can a site called Rock Tumbling Hobby not have a rock tumbling section?

I agree completely. My areas of interest are to hunt and collect rocks (fossils, too), cut the larger ones into manageable sizes, and tumble the ones I think might give nice results at the end. I have no desire whatsoever to sit for hours on end in front of a cabbing machine. I am aware, of course, the one has full control of the outcome when cabbing and many people have gotten extremely beautiful results, but cabbing is not in my area of interest.

Well here's a thought.. why not just add to the name of the forum.. I mean it's all about rocks .. we all can find some middle ground rather it be in tumbling , cabbing or whatever.. but either way .. a section just for tumbling is cool too.. not sure what the difference will be.. but Yaay for a place like this!

KG1960 you and I are on the opposite end of the spectrum. I appreciate tumbling but have not interest in doing it. I do buy tumbled piece lots to cab because you can see how the piece is going to look polished. I prefer to create a scene from a rock and have a normalized shape. Tumbled: Cabbed:

The way I see it, tumbling is pretty much the "gateway drug" that leads to Lapidary addiction.
Some people can stop at tumbling and get what they want out of it, but others feel a need to go on to more ambitious undertakings.
The overall message board I always thought is about tumbling, specific forums have been established to focus on other aspects of the lapidary world, but I think leaving the message board open to tumbling as the general overall topic shouldn't then require a "tumbling only" forum.
But that's just my take....for what its worth

That's what keeps the world from being boring - everyone has their own set of interersts.

DOH! *smacking forehead* Thanks Rally, guess I'm too used to the open polls where you can see what's going on.

Well from a newbie's perspective I'd love a tumbling only section. I'm going through the archives reading all the old stuff about every subject, but it would be nice to have all the tumbling posts in one location since that's all I'm currently doing. Just my 2 cents!

While I'm cabbing, my tumblers are going at the same time, along with my saw. I've only tripped the breaker once, because I had the space heater hooked up. ;D

Well I think it is silly to call it Rock Tumbling Hobby, and not have a Tumbling section, when you have Cabochons, and wire wrapping, plus I feel the general board has a lot more on other aspects of rocking, than tumbling. Terry

Yes we should have it. Why call it Rock Tumbling Hobby if there is no dedicated section for it?

A section on tumbling only should make it very handy for the new kids to pick up answers to most commonly asked questions, also old farts like myself that suffer Senior Moments. I JUST KNEW I READ IT HERE SOMEPLACE , six months ago !!!
Another section that would be neat would be a place that would have a collage of home made lapidary equipment. Instead of buying a good piece of used equipment for $60.00, some mechanically challenged dufass, ( I resemble that ) could have a living blueprint so to speak, and build it himself for twice as much !!!

The thing about the tumbling... you've got some people posting questions under general... others posting under Lapidary... and every so often pictures in amongst everything else in the member pics folder...
I'm not going anywhere... I'll be here looking for info regardless...but it'd be nice to say "this folder is for all things tumbling"

YES, we need a tumbling-only section! When I'm looking for answers to my tumbling problems, I end up plowing through a ton of trading posts and slabbing posts and hippy posts - gee you're the coolest, no you're the coolest.... rock tumbling hobby.... make it so.

I will second JJlee's opinion. I am also a newbie, and although I've sort of enjoyed searching through the racks with my pen and little notebook, collecting recipes on tumbling obsidian (when the search option actually works!) and will continue to do so.....a "TUMBLING" section would be nice. It's what I'm doing now......til I get my WF saw....and my wire I ordered comes in........."gateway drug" HA!
