Great recovery! I could do with some more steel, but I keep buying rocks! Rocks are funner. All that scrap yard findings. the billets were temporary shims for setting heavy machinery, $.40/pound.

cool find! You say "ball forming anvils", but what will you do/make using these?

Those are pretty cute, but why? What are you going to use them for?

cool find! You say "ball forming anvils", but what will you do/make using these? Pat did a spoon. I did one too and used a 1 inch bearing mounted the same to hammer the bowl. But main intent is to hammer pre-form concave bezels for tumbles. They are also designed to serve as dies in a hydraulic press. Am thinking about making dies to fit tumbles by contour modeling. Like a die ground out of steel to mimic the back side of a tumble. Am shopping for an electric hydraulic jack, or make one. Similar to a gas powered log splitter but electric.

Ed, that is exactly what I want-to a T. Chop it up some and convert it vertical and to sit on a bench. Electric motor, hydrualic pump, controls and ram cylinder-for $300, a deal. Would put a flow reg or adjust existing to slow speed. Could use a smaller unit. May find an electric shop press that is more suitable. I was thinking about you Ed. I know you are in the tire biz. Got back from the hospital 2AM this morn. I will be fine, but may loose the end of my pinky finger, maybe the next one too. I ran into my sister in law. Her Bmw had a flat. I started changing the rear wheel in the parking lot of CVS drug store. The jack did not raise the car quite enough. I reached into the spokes of the wheel to yank the wheel off. Unfortunately I also grabbed the disc brake rotor and pulled the wheel off the lugs but also pulled it off the jack. The rotor landed on the tip of my fingers inside the wheel along with the weight of the car. It took about 5 minutes to get a bunch of people to lift the car off my fingers. Not sure I ever felt so much pain. Got a photo, most of the damage is internal. I was certain that the sharp edged rotor cut all my finger tips off. Please be cautious. morphine feels good but will wear off. gonna be some pain in my future. Doc expects 100% recovery, 40% chance loosing pinky tip.

James, you are looking for something to pound your steel dies into metal?
Google "treadle hammer." It is electric, and already turned vertically. Blacksmiths use them.

Would love to have a treadle hammer Jean. A small one for jewelry. And the above slow hydraulic press too. Seems you guys have a treadle hammer ?

Never put your fingers where you wouldn't put your _____. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Finger injuries are the worst.

Good God! James, that looks really awful! Take good care of it and enjoy the painkillers while you have them.
I am reminded of a time when my son had a cinderblock dropped on his 3 biggest finger tips. Thought he would lose them, but he didn't. It was terrible to see, though. The nails were cracked and broken and embedded into his nail bed. Not what a mother wants to see on her young son.

Thanks much bushmanbilly. Oilpatch saying adds to caution awareness. Fingers do sting.

Thanks for the good wishes Scott. Hey, I would prefer a shop press like that but got to have a motor and hydraulic pump. They are made commonly, but get sort of industrial in price. Out of many, cheapest unit on Ebay at $3000 vs $299 for log splitter(must be modified). Go figure.
