Thanks for bringing this subject up. I've been using an old Barranca GP8 that I got for a song, converted over to all diamond wheels and belts and one Nova wheel. My hard wheels are a 60g sintered, 220 wheel from Jadecarver, then I use a 280 Nova, then 600, 1200, 8k Raytec True circle belts. I cut a lot of cabs and usually will cut a dozen or so at a time, so swapping belts wasn't a problem. I'm at the point now where I will be switching over to using all Nova type wheels for my sanding because there just isn't any diamond sanding belt available that's worth a Damn. Eastwind belts don't last, Crystalite belts are way too aggressive, and the quality of the Raytec True Circle belts has gone down the tubes. So, the problem with Nova wheels is the inital cost, I use 8" wheels and they are $160 apiece, so I'm looking at $600+. However, Covington is now selling Nova type wheels for $88 for the 8" wheels and something like $60 for 6" wheels. I'm trying out the 280 wheel now, and if it looks like it's going to be as good or close to a Nova wheel, I'll order the rest of what I need.

My wife was always bugging me to come up with a way to back light a plume agate cab so that it wouldn't be like a neon light hanging around your neck, just something subtle but effective. I was in my garage one day and I saw the perfect method sitting in amongst a bunch of clutter on my work bench. I was wanting to either copyright the process or even patent what I came up with before I revealed what it was, but apparently SOMEBODY felt it necessary to reveal it for me, Thank you Daniel! Anyway, the results are subtle, and it doesn't take batteries and it doesn't take much light to be effective. Here are a few of the cabs I've done. In the shade In the sun shade sunlight

Hey KD, good seeing some of your cabs again. They look as good as ever too. I love the WWR and the other plume the best.

You did really good Randy. Sounds like you had one of my typical days of cabbing! Great shapes and choice of material. You've come a long way from the days of shaping on the circular saw!!!!!!

I'm glad to see you're taking some time to cut cabs again Mel. These two as well as the cabs in your other posts are top notch.

Nice cabs. The Riker boxes are great for keeping the dust off the cabs. You've got a nice collection going.

Thanks everyone. No Steve, I didn't get the Sonora plume at the sale, but I did get an awesome chunk of the Regency Rose for $.50/lb and a few other choice rocks. And Susan, sorry, they are already sold. I just got my 1000th sale the other day!

Nice cabs Steve. I've about had it with Raytech belts and there isn't any other type of belts that are worth a hoot, so it looks like I'll be switching over to Nova wheels too.

I did this lapis doublet quite a while ago. It's a thin piece of boulder opal on top of lapis. The blue you see in the boulder opal isn't the lapis, but a flash of opal in the matrix.
