www.openelement.com/ gave me the tools to create a website for my wife's soaping business www.sudzslabs.com. I had to watch a few video tutorials but I found it pretty easy to use and understand. Also, it is freeware. All the best, Michael

The material is Hixton Silicified Sandstone and it is not a finished piece. Often when a knapper ran into difficulties with a piece they would discard it, especially when they were near the quarry. The "projection" you photographed is called a stack by knappers and that one is a big one! The piece could be thousands of years old; native peoples made bifaces (preforms) like this from 12,000 BC - contact.
All the best, Michael

I got it :-) it's counterclockwise to remove the nut. Took some WD40 soakings but it broke loose.
Any recommendations on a new blade? It's a 10 inch and the old blade that is now very bent says Lopacki.
Thanks, Michael

I'm having a heck of a time getting the bent blade off the arbor. Any advice on getting the nut loose? Thank you, Michael

I agree the oil does seem to leak out in spots and drainage is an issue.
Unfortunately, I really screwed up this morning while cutting. The rock got loose and now I have a bent blade. I don't know if anything else is damaged. I'll get it taken apart this afternoon.
Any recommendations on a new blade?
Thank you, Michael

RTH is so useful! I just purchased a used RayTech L 10S and this thread is really handy! Thank you to those who post and share their knowledge. Anyone have any good tips or tricks for this saw?
All the best, Michael

I went the cheap route... I used a thick rectangular block of Styrofoam and punched holes in it for my dop sticks/cabs. After two years it is holding up well and it's waterproof too. Might have to upgrade in the future though! Nice work!

Silicified Stromatoporoid Chert from Tennessee! Ordovician in age (around 450 million years ago). Technically, it is called Bigby/Cannon Chert because it comes from a limestone formation of the same name. Knaps great when the banding is fully silicified! Michael

Sure thing, I'd be happy to chip some of your Knife River.
Thanks, Michael

Yup, looks like Knife River Flint to me. I've been knapping for 20 years and have chipped a bunch of this stone. Works great and it's beautiful when you get it thin and semi-translucent. One piece you have pictured (center /left) that is somewhat triangular looks like primo knapping material. When I lived near St. Louis I actually found small pieces in the gravel bars of the Mississippi R. on occasion.

As I learned in several of my 100 level Geology classes, the temperature is always in flux. We are in an interglacial, a geological interval of warmer global average temperature lasting thousands of years that separates consecutive glacial periods within an ice age. The current Holocene interglacial has persisted since the end of the Pleistocene, about 11,700 years ago. So, enjoy it for the rest of the span... however long that will be.

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help me figure out why my Mini-Sonic just stopped working. I had it loaded just like normal last night. I turned it on and it was fine but I go out to that garage an hour later and it had stopped running. I turn the switch on and off... nothing. I check the plug for power, it's fine. I opened it up and checked all the wire connections and they all appear connected. I'm out of ideas. Thank you, Michael

Thanks for the quick reply. I checked out your shop and cab... I was thinking something a bit darker.

Hi All, I am looking to buy a Malachite freeform cabochon to wire wrap a pendant for a gift. I tried all the websites I frequent but, no luck. I'm hoping that an RTH'er can fix me up Thank you, Michael
