Yep. Tried the waterpick with little results. I think the holes are too small.

Okay this a 2 parter. This is my quandary. I have these three quartzite (I don't know if they are agate or quartz...i'll call them "cheetos quartzite") with pit/pock/wormholes with grit stuck in them. (the pictures vaguely illustrate this). I'm putting it through a 24 hour borax wash. I was wondering if anything would get this deep stuff out. People on the forum stated that epoxy would work once the grit is out...but that is moot since the grit wont come out. I'll try an ultrasonic cleaner...but are there any other ideas? Attachments:

Hello all. Quick technical question. Will increasing the time of the 220 grit, from let's say one week to two weeks, "improve" the smoothing? Or will that be a futile attempt since the grit beaks down?

I love ocean stuff. Mixing of land and sea...all that entropy puts out so much beauty.

Me personally, I just use one of the 6er's because I run heavy all the time. I just make sure everything is cleaned and oiled after every "long" cycle. (took me 1 month+ for my beach rocks at 60/90).

Thanks Helen. I read somewhere that >95% of meteorites are rich in iron...ergo stick to magnets. No such luck

Here's a lump of stone found in my late grandmother's back yard. This is a four parter. It measures 7x2x3. It's very heavy and rather bland looking. Is it layered igneous rock, gneiss.....? I have no idea where it came from. Attachments:

It was actually found, as a larger piece, coated with mysterious white stuff. I though it was paint..but I assume paint would have tumbled off.

I found this agate in my late grandmother's backyard along with Davis Creek-type obsidian (Northern California). The pattern is quite nice except it has this mysterious white stuff stuck in the pocks/pits which just will not tumble out. This is gone through multiple coarse tumbles without luck. Unfortunately I do not own a grinder or dremel. <stone is wet> Attachments:

Thanks everyone! I think i'm going to do the careful cleaning then epoxy. I think i'm going to stick with the tumbler, so I become a little bit more knowledgeable about rocks and minerals before attempting "grinding".

Pits

Hello all, since I am a tumbling novice, I do not own lap saws or a grinder. My only ability of polishing rocks is a tumbler. Now my question is this: if I have a stone with deep pits and really like the piece regardless of the flaws...is there any way of filling the pits with something so that each following cycle isn't contaminated with previous grit lodged in the pits? Thanks.

I can stare at these stones all day. Nice job. The green jaspers almost remind me of Big Sur nephrite jade.
