Interesting. I'm really curious what it is. Maybe you can name it "avocado jasper". ;D

Thanks for replying Tommy. Yes, I tried the flashlight test. Surface translucency with areas that actually shines through, but mostly opaque with a sandy, grainy under surface. Sorta' like, hollowing out a nugget of obsidian and put some sand in it. That's what it looks like.

Hello Tommy. I posted the piece in the "I.D." portion of the board. Unfortunately, I don't have a lap. saw. I know how you feel about throwing rocks back into "coarse grind". My larger San Simeon Beach jaspers are colorful but notoriously pitted. It may take two months just to get them down to a decent point.

Hello all, I found this piece at "Agate Beach", Bolinas, California (Marin County). This place is know for it's small-sized oil agates. I found this deeply pock marked piece (only one divot) and I am wondering what it is. It does have the bizarre white pattern and slight ares of translucency. Under the surface it looks rather grainy. Is this an agate mixture or some sort of chert? Thanks! Attachments:

Translucent or opaque? I'm curious to find out what everyone thinks. It seems like when-in-doubt chert. ;D

Tommy, post away. The more pictures the better. This is the only other piece that I collected in Bolinas. It took an okay polish but there is a big pock mark in it. Any idea what this? Areas of translucency..but an underlying grainy look. The white inclusions are bizarre. Attachments:

Wow! Hard to to tell, but it looks like jade. The poppy jasper thing, is just amazing.

Also, i'd love to see pictures of the jade you found. I'm a Big Sur jade hound. P/S: I see you are from Pleasant Hill..i'm from Martinez.

Thanks for the info Tommy. I'm still not totally familiar with the differences between quartz and agate...guess it's a learning curve. What blows me away is the "Poppy Jasper" which I thought was exclusive to the Llagas Creek/ Morgan Hill area. Yep, the area I went to was the south parking lot, traversing my way through the notch in the point, south across the boulder field. Guess I have to wait for a storm. ;D

Lynn, did you find these agates at several beaches, during negative low tide and after a storm...yada yada? In other word, how were you so successful?

Lynn I found this at a negative low tide, far north side. It was at the water line wedged in a sandy nook.

Ugh. disappointed that it is quartz. I guess better luck next time. I pulled it out of the tumbler and it's becoming clear in color. I guess it will make a good "leaverite" paper weight LOL. I guess I should stick to jade.

James, if you get a chance, I think you would really like the Los Padres National Forest/Jade Cove in Big Sur area. Occasionally some really nice nephrite pops-up there. Also San Simeon in San Luis Obispo County has some really nice jasper chert combos. What kind of stones do you search for in your area? I know somewhere in the South you can find some really nice amethysts.

I'm sorry Lynn. I'm very novice to this. You're saying the large pock-marked piece may have plumes? I'm not sure in what context what plumes are.

Hello Lynn. Marble?? I would have never thought. My only exposure to natural marble was in the Scottish "Highlands". Wow!!! Nice collection. Did you collect the whole beach. LOL. Is the piece (in my picture) at the one o'clock position quartzite/quartz or chalcedony/agate? I can't tell the difference. You seem to be really well versed in this area. Henry

Um, first time there. So i'm really new to what's what. I know the area is known for agates and I think petrified whale bone. I know Monterey and SLO County to some degree ;D...but not here.

Hey there "zarguy'. Went there yesterday because of this very post. You're right, I was the only one there. I rock hounded for only an hour-and-a-half since I was tired from working the day previous, but, I found some interesting stones...albeit not all agate. Attachments:
