Looks as if you survived the trip with serial killer-esque Roland safely herchenx, and got to see a whole lot of the beautiful Utah/Wyoming/Colorado country that is so picturesque!!! When I was last living in Salt Lake, I did retrofit vinyl window installations all over throughout the same country where you were at during this photorama, and I saw more beautiful specimens and also country while there than I have ever seen anywhere else in my life (which is a statement coming from someone born and raised in The Gem State) LOL Glad you had a good and productive trip my friend and thank you for the very complete and detailed coverage!!!

1nickthegreek - Here's a link showing how I modified my 20" Lortone to be like a Reciprolap. Got rid of the orange peel texture on some rock species, though it seems to work slower. That may be due to the motor running at around 1050rpm or so rather than the 1550rpm of the stock motor. Might also be because I need to anchor the rig down better to stop the base from jiggling so that only the pan jiggles. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/62688/presenting-reciprotoneC-ya, Rick Thank you so much for this link Rick, was going to ask you for help with doing this LOL

Just traded for an old Lortone 20" vibe setup, thanks for all the tips and tricks, do I need to use different grit in the flat lap, or can I just use the regular tumbler grits that I already have? Thanks in advance!!!!

I'm not spending money on any tumbler that requires me to go out and buy cinder blocks and drill and mount it... that's just absurd. Kinda depends on how much you want to be running. My Thumlers UV-10 works great, but having to watch it all the time is a drag. If you have enough rotary capacity to bang out the rough-ground rocks in quantity, get something bigger; bigger is always better. I'm rolling almost a hundred pounds in coarse grit currently. Might get a UV-18 next, muwhahahahaha. Oh, such an addiction. Yeah, that is the only thing I am concerned about with the Lot-o is having to mount it on a cinder block (although I do have about 50 of them sitting around ) , but I may possibly be able to get a fellow rock hound to come over and do that for me....about to buy a thumlers 15 pound roller or build a giant one like I have seen in threads here so going to definitely want a far bigger vibe than this lil raytech I am running right now lol Thanks for the help folks, will let ya all know what I pick up soon.

Tell them to be sure and stop at a Basque Family Style restaurant or two in the Sparks area and have the best steak dinner they will ever come across for dirt cheap LOL I know nothing of obsidian collecting down around there, just used to work around the area from time to time and always loved to eat at the Basque places, sorry

A lot of people (but not me) put their Lot-O on several blocks so they don't have to bend down to use it. You could put it at a height that works with your chair. Lot-Os are not very mobile, so if you really need to move the whole tumbler around a lot, I wouldn't recommend it, If you get a double Lot-O, you need to fill both barrels before using it. You can't run it with just one barrel full. I have a single Lot-O with an extra barrel for polishing. Well, I will have to see where my finances lead me, gonna keep running this TV-5 until it is totally junked, which it is starting to crap out already so now the search begins very seriously lol.

I am a chronic ceramic user, I tumble obsidian 75% of the time, and they carry the grit better than anything I have found thus far. So just trying them with the pet wood as half of it is opalized and needs a little bit of buffer to not fracture, ya know what I mean?

I need recommendations for a small tumbler. Don't want to make it. From what I recall Harbor Freight is junk, and Lortone is junk. Can you recommend a decent beginner's tumbler? Thanks. I have had NO issues with any of my Lortone tumblers, (I run a double three pound barrel tumbler and also a single six pounder). My Harbor Freight has given me no problems so far, has ran 24/7 since before Christmas. As long as you keep the tumbler oiled well and the belts tight they all work great. What do you consider a Small tumbler, 1.5 pounder, or even smaller??

Thank you all for the input, I think I am going to get the double Lot-O when I do and make the second barrel a dedicated polish barrel. However with me being in a wheelchair, I need something that I can move around fairly easily, so that makes the Thumler more attractive to me......decisions decisions decisions.

Also 1nickthegreek someone correct me if im wrong cause ive never used ceramics before but ....for your coarse stage in rotary id try to focus on all rocks, and mix up the sizes, all your stones look to be larger size, you could use more smalls atleast 25% of your load should be smalls.......if im wrong forgive me, just trying to help Thanks bro, but it was actually just loaded to show the rocks more than anything, there are smalls in there along with close to 25% ceramics.
