Nick, that tumbler looks way too full to me. How are those large pieces going to move? I just but all the larges up top, it is actually over 25% smalls down in there lol and they move like crazy oddly enough.

No idea what the weather is in western Idaho, but it has rained for the past 36 hours here in Southeastern Idaho, so all of ya be sure to take some rain gear and have a ball for the fat guy in the wheelchair since I am not gonna make it, possibly another time!!!

So just to continue with herchenx theories, I decided to start a 6 pounder of petrified wood with the exact same recipe just doubled!!! WIll check in regularly with updates, but here are the pictures. 6 pound barrel 5.125 pounds of petrified wood. In the barrel 4 Tbsp 60/90 12 Tbsp water down in there, can anyone see it? Then a couple handfuls of ceramic just to get the grit to move around better. So, I will update in 10 days with more pics, see you all then.

Well heres what im working with, I may have took one or two larger stones out and sprinkled the top with more pea gravel....gripped and squeezed the barrel to see where I truly was load wise , added 4 ounces water....that's 8 tbls right? 3 tblspoons grit, I wasn't trying to make a mess so the tblspoons weren't level and lacking a little on one side on each scoop so I put in about an extra quarter tablespoon of grit...if anyone thinks this sounds wrong let me know so I can fix any problems, my grit ran out fast, I might have enough for one more round so I really want to make this round countPM me your address and I will send you 2 or 3 pounds of grit after the first of the month when I get my disability payment, do you want coarse, or 220 grit? I just happen to have over 5 pounds of each just sitting here, I do not want you running outta grit and losing your fire. Good idea to set the aquas aside for now, wait until you have more experience under your belt and give them another shot!!!!

Hey John, I'm about as experienced as you are, but I'm still enjoying this discussion. It's fun to see other people's procedure. Are you going to do anything about the vug in the rock that is in the fourth picture from the bottom? I would cut that rock horizontally so the vug is removed. I'd be afraid to leave it because it could carry grit to later stages. I also like my rocks to be completely free of imperfections if I can (usually I don't accomplish this, but it's a goal). If you would normally leave it, I'd love to see a picture of the end result. I just use Hot Stuff cyanoacrylate (super glue) and fill the holes then let it cure for 24 hours and toss em back in the tumbler rather than messing with sawing anything (I still only have bigger saws and no little 4 or 5 inch trim saw) LOL

Just loaded 4 three pound barrels with this recipe, Obsidian got ceramics and pet wood got plastic to make them 3/4+ full....will report back on the 31st of April after they are done with their ten day run. May just try the same ratio for my 6 pound Lortone, but it only roughs obsidian out for the vibe and I am not sure if I wanna screw with what I have working for me right now LOL

tkv...i usually run rocks 3 to 4 inches. they do fine in the rotary but are too big for my new vive thumblers 10 pound. i have a thumblers 12 pound rotary that i've had for a few years. i've only ran 6 or 8 batches thru the rotary. the vibe is new and am still working on first batch. 1nick...as stated, the vibe is new. i did 1 batch first 2 steps before realizing they were too big, so running step 2 on a smaller batch now. have used it for about 6 days total. have grit kit also. what are you thinking as an offer? it's a thumblers UV10 with 1 pound grit minus what i've used so far (maybe 1 cup step 1 and 3/4 cup step 2. I honestly have no idea what a fair offer for it would be, maybe you'll fall in love with it after ya run a few batches, so I will wait for you to throw a number at me down the road

i'll check out those 2 companies. iaccording to the directions, i use 1 cup grit in my 12 pound rotary and 3/4 cup grit in the 10 pound vibe. i might have to start cutting back on both. Definitely, I am running a 6 lb single drum and two dual drum three pounder's for a total of 18 pounds rough running nonstop, along with my 5 pound vibe and use maybe a cup a week of grit. I just do as Randy instructs in this thread for the vibe and pout it in until rocks are all coated. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/337618/thread

wrap it with tyre inner tube to expand the girth or foam/rubber backed carpet, that will slow your tumbling action down, and without messing your tumbler up. again tumbling with nuts, you can fill it up and theres less movement and damage is minimalised to none. There's very little room between the sides of the barrel and the sides of the frame, maybe 3/16", but I discovered that I could put fat rubber bands around the barrel to slightly increase the diameter. Unfortunately, after a few days of running the rubber bands began to degrade and left sticky mung all over the outside of the barrel. So that's out. Go to the nearest parts supply house and get some thick diameter Silicone O-Rings, problem solved, Enigman.

hey tkv...when you say you run the first step for a month, i assume you mean in a rotary? i'm kinda new to this but i am wondering, based on some things i've read...doesnt the grit break down over time? do you really get much more out of a month than you would say 10 days? just curious. i have so much to tumble i dont think i could wait that long. i also think, for me, it was a mistake to buy a vibratory tumbler. my rocks are just too big and, unless i get some things figured out soon, i just dont see myself using the vibratory much. too bad i cant send it back and get my money back. Hey fixfireleo, if or when you decide to sell your vibe, please let me know and I may buy it from you (if you decide to that is) Thanks

Another one that I have ordered from several times, their grit is graded and works so well, and 20.00 for 10 pounds of 220 is real good IMO Jesco, good service and shipping isnt bad from them either.

Just a recommendation fixfireleo I have seen too many warnings about not using 60/90 in a vibe, guess you will go check one day and have a slurry pool on the floor and all around the vibe when it eats a hole through the bowl, so be careful.

I just bought a big batch of grit from this supplier on Amazon. abrasives Great pricing and very reasonable shipping!!! Seems to be fantastic grit so far, it's grinding like mad for me!!! I have a ten pound jug of 90 grit that I am willing to part with at my cost + shipping, PM if interested.
