i have a rock or two like that one tumbling right now, green and reddish purple. but mine are from the Yukon and northern BC. its a very hard rock. the metal didnt scratch it, it scratched the metal. and its tumbling nicely, very little wearing, keeping the size but smoothing out. i will try to dig them out and take a picture

perhaps you need to do steps 3 and 4 again, this time dont burnish the rocks in between those two steps. they are prepolish and polish. i dont ever burnish between steps 3 and 4 and my last batch came out nice and shiny. actually i only use the ivory soap after all my steps are done and i'm happy with the rocks.

ah I was just sitting here pondering, you know, the stuff you ponder while the tumbler is grinding away on week 3 with a batch of ocean jasper and pet wood (that my husband found with his lawn mower....) good for me, not so good for the blades on the mower. I use grits in case I forgot to mention. I did notice that my stage one grit was getting low so thats what started my pondering...and also waiting for my treasures...Perhaps I should instead buy a second tumbler or a third one...hmmm, you see my dilemma...maybe I should go rock hounding while I wait for my rocks..yes more rocks, all ponderings are solved with more rocks...HAHA

Could you not just use a few tablespoons of fine sand as a grit in stage one of a tumbler?
what is a 60/90 grit made of? looks like fine sand to me
Anyone tried this before?

I have a vibe on my wish list too...
I have never used leather in the rotary but i I do use plastic pellets for the prepolish and polish cycles. i just wash the pellets good and reuse them just for the two cycles. I should clarify that each cycle has its own batch of pellets. then i use an Ivory soap bar to clean the stones when they are done. Still working on the patience though. by the time I get to polish I am so excited to see the stones come out that I get impatient and hurry it through. haha

Hudson's Hope. Williston Lake. Its a huge lake created by the dam built on the Peace River. We have fossils everywhere in this area. Tumbler Ridge is another great area for fossils. We also have Jade and Rhodonite in Northeastern BC and of course gold too..
