So... I was able to use my brain and created more space in the box. With that.. Everything I selected (see above) is now in the box. Coming into this, I knew almost anything put in there, I would more than likely already have material of and thats perfectly fine with me. I mostly wanted to be a part of this to put stuff in peoples hands most wouldn't acquire without spending big bucks or knowing the right people. I want to be clear that there has been some nice stuff put in there, even some material I really wanted (and got it). However.. as mentioned, I already had a bunch of some and didn't need anymore. Now, i'm probably going to ruffle a few feathers and potentially offend or piss people off. It is definitely not my intention. If thats the case, please direct your hate mail to my inbox. REMINDER!!! This box is to be AUCTIONED OFF!!! While going through the box, I encountered some good/fair stuff and what I would consider a large amount of stuff that I personally felt should've never been placed in there in the first place. I was honestly pretty disappointed. I could have honestly cared less if I took a single thing out of that box. But if i'm being frank, no ones going to want to bid on some of that stuff. This in return.. makes it to where anything that is worth a damn gets taken and we're left with crap to auction. A great example of this would be if someone takes the vistaite, then replaces it with ohio flint, its not particularly fair to someone down the line who may have material to match the vistaite. Then for the next person if all they see is crap in the box, might not be as generous as myself, and just put more crap in the box, repeating the cycle until we are left with material no one wants to bid on. If you cant pay back the debt, dont take out the loan. I hate playing the badguy and the rock Nazi. And i'm sure i'm coming across as an entitled rock snob asshole trying to dictate things (so be it). I understand that not everyone has what myself or others have, perfectly fine, but moving forward lets try our bests to create a box of material someone would want to bid on. Now that i'm off my high horse, Heres the box packed. I took the liberty to reorganize stuff, made compartments so the tumbling rough, etc is confined. All the slabs are tightly concealed safe in the middle. I added more packaging to make sure nothing breaks. Heres, what I took. What I added Nyedegger plume agate, Willow creek jasper, Chinese jasper, Richardsons rock ranch sunset jasper, Morrisonite jasper, Royal eyes cabenite jasper, Vistaite jasper, Batcave jasper. I was going to mention about reinforcing the box. Probably don't have enough room but I have usually put extra cardboard (wedged at the ends) all around the inside of the box and it makes the medium size box way stiffer. Takes time to do right. Regarding your comments about value of materials, one of the things that made me hesitant about joining in was that I don't have a good feel for values of a lot of materials (especially the stuff you have!). Since you have raised the issue of value and quality of material, don't be surprised if you get a PM (when I get the box) asking about values of some items.

Good ideas all regarding reinforcing the boxes - in past traveling box games we have learned the hard way that the boxes really get beat up and usually the first spot to go is the bottom and side corners. Regarding the quality of rocks the spirit of it has always been just do the best you can! Take what you like and put something else that you like back in. My personal feelings are gratitude to roy for once again contributing to the health and well-being of the forum followed by hoping that everyone has fun with it especially the newcomers who haven't experienced this yet. I am literally not sitting here hoping that when the box arrives at my house it will be full of the finest rocks so it can draw the highest bid possible. I like being last on the list because it will give me a chance to clean it all up and steal the really GOOD rocks that completed the journey (j/k)

The point of this is NOT the auction. It's to have a good time. In the past, there was always a mixture of good and bad rocks. But, you have to remember-- one man's trash is another man's treasure. People put in what they can and not everyone can add the "good stuff". I hope that no one feels like they need to pass up what they love to keep it in the box for the auction. At the same time, don't hoard the good stuff. If you have mundane rocks, try to add more to make up for what you are taking. Lots of things have ended up in the box- templates, finished tumbles, tools, special cabs... Add what you can people.
These boxes always end up with more than what they start with and have always had a good mixture for everyone. We don't usually have an auction for what is left. The box goes around and what's left starts a new box. Don't get hung up by the auction. It'll all work out.
Have fun. No hard feelings.
Thanks for saying this. All last night I was worrying that whatever I put in the box would be considered crap by some people and that I should just drop out. 😂 I am pretty new to this hobby, and I thought this traveling box was meant to be a fun way to get to know some people better, to have some fun looking at beautiful rocks and help make this forum (which has been instrumental to my growth as a tumbler) a little bit of money.

One of the best things about it is you get a chance to see stuff that you may not have otherwise. I had just started out, too, when I joined my first box. I was thrilled to death about ALL of the rocks. I put in what I could and got a few things that were new to me. It was fun. (Not to mention the puzzle of putting everything back together!)

Since I participated in the game I wanted to chime in. I believe we are all playing by the rule, by posting what have been taken and what have been put back in. So far I don't see a pattern of taking something like the Vistalite and replacing it with something like Ohio Flints. But I have limited knowledge about the values of some of the slabs, so please ignore me if you see something I don't see. The box wasn't super packed to begin with, and I did add a variety of materials to fill the spaces, with no intention of reducing the value of the box, although these materials might not be super valuable or rare. You did just fine and added plenty of stuff that will suit the tumblers well. Don’t read too far into what I was trying to convey. Wasn’t directed at you or anyone specific. Also.. you didn’t devalue the box.

Box has been dropped off. It goes to khara next. Don’t know when it will be there, but since she’s just north of me, I’m assuming it’ll be there within the week. Box securing. As mentioned prior, the box was already packed full with a lot of stuff. What I did, and might be the way to keep if moving forward, was created containment sections in the box. You can see I the pics posted above. All of the stuff that’s tumble material (and is waaay less likely to break is on the outsides contained in its own protective lil cardboard boxes. I put new padding in, and all the slab stuff is snugly and securely placed between towards the center. The rough I included was secured in its own lil corner towards an outside edge. I made it to where the was no free space and stuff can’t move freely. Addressing my prior comment’s. Don’t read too far into it. I personally would just like to see everyone get some good stuff that is useable and they are happy with. As far as materials I put in, I put that stuff in there for you guys to take. As far as I’m concerned, there is some really nice stuff there and I put it in to give some members the opportunity to work some materials they might not have the opportunity to work. What I was trying to convey, is just be mindful in the fact that you’re not taking out 5 $100s and replacing it with 5 $1s if that makes sense? Thus so you’re giving members after you an opportunity to snag some nice and cool stuff they might not have the opportunity to work. Once again, I completely understand not everyone has what others might and that is 100% ok. It’s hard to convey what I’m trying to over text without sounding like a complete a-hole. If you personally knew me, you’d understand that’s not my intention 😂. To sum this up and move on, I read some comments about not really understanding the prices of materials etc.. I’m not going to blast the prices of stuff in this thread. But if you’re curious, pm me and I’ll share approximates. Have fun ✌️

My 1st year doing the box I was overhead by all the goodies. It really can be a rock nerds treasure chest. I got to see stuff I never heard of before and that set me down the rabbit hole even further. Thank you roy for starting another one up, it was long overdue And speaking of a traveling box. Cody Luminin where are you ?

Side note. For anyone who snags some of that batcave rough. If you have questions on how to process it, feel free to reach out to me. Obviously, it’s not like your typical jasper that comes in nodules. It forms in thin layers and you have to cut the host material off the back. I but if you got questions on how to best process it, don’t hesitate to reach out.

…And speaking of a traveling box. Cody Luminin where are you ? Still in Ohio! 😝 Busier than ever before, 2 (3?) new hobbies, just bought what will eventually be a house after I finish a complete renovation, nearing the end of my apprenticeship, college classes nearly complete as well. And yes, I still have rocks coming out of my ears, just with everything else they’re on hold. Pretty sure I have a box sitting around here somewhere that was supposed to go out, but that Covid interrupted… 🤔

Pat I took your blue piece of tigers eye and that piece of plume. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your lace coffee coaster got shattered. My speculation is because of the feet on it, it caused too much gap, then when usps was throwing it around, it got smashed. I took it out (along with another slab that was in 40 different pieces) and can repurpose it into cabs. Question for ya. What is that gold and black plume slab? Material name or locality on it?

Put that in there per one of our last discussions 😂 I’m just kidding. I’m just hoping everything makes it in one piece. I’m hoping the way I packed things keeps things more secure by eliminating all the free space.

realrockhound I did spot that Willow Creek right away, having recently been drooling over that last contest cab of yours! I haven’t decided yet if I’ll resort to eenie-meenie-miney-moe or the more sophisticated and not at all nerdy option of rolling some polyhedra dice that I may or may not steal out of an old D&D game.
