Realrockhound, should I make my next cab round so I don't miss any corners?

Realrockhound, should I make my next cab round so I don't miss any corners? Personally.. I love round cabs. They are one shape where if they are off.. (dome or shape) they stick out like a sore thumb. Kinda challenging to do but look so nice when you get them perfect. But to answer your question. Hell yeah brother

As always gorgeous work!! This one was too intimidating for me, and I just didn't have the time. Looking forward to the next contest.

As always, I'll let the voters decide. My thought is someone was actually trying to help a struggling contest that was about to close with FOUR entries and lately seems to be teetering on the edge. Yeah...yeah...I know...stupid choice for a theme! LOL

It was a great theme choice, wish life would have let me participate. This month is too, maybe I can craft something that meets the criteria for both, as a form of penance.

Yeah...yeah...I know...stupid choice for a theme! LOL Stop it! It was a great theme! I'm sorry if you really took my post to mean that the theme needed to be propped up. I say this with deep appreciate for everyone who participates in the contests, both entrants and discussion participants, but during covid era we all had a lot more time on our hands and the contests were averaging in the 16 to 19 entries. I knew at the time that it was likely unsustainable but I didn't expect it to drop quite this low by 2023. I've been wondering if it's time for a break in the action - maybe mix it up a bit with a yearly mega-contest like we had a while back?

I think a play off is a good idea!

I think more entries per person is also a good idea that could be considered.

Ummmm, Tommy, what’s a mega-contest? I also like the idea of more than one winner.

Ummmm, Tommy, what’s a mega-contest? Hi Pat it was the Mohs memorial cab contest - I cut up a bunch of material and mailed out slabs to contestants who bought in.

What strikes me as odd . . . how many on this board say they knock out cabs in half an hour or forty-five minutes . . . but somehow a month is never enough time.

A lot of us work. I know some have screwed up schedules. I know I’ve been in positions where I had other stuff going on over the weekends and lose track of time. Then realize I’m scraping by trying to cut something different because I try to make a point with every cab I cut to not recycle the same old crap (not saying I haven’t) but don’t like to make a habit out of it. So that screws me if I’m running on a tight schedule

I've been wondering if it's time for a break in the action - maybe mix it up a bit with a yearly mega-contest like we had a while back? I didn't take offense...nor was I butthurt...nor anything else negative! For me, it is a matter of not having time now versus how life was last year! Rich is right...it only takes me 30 to 45 minutes to make a cab...once it's on dop. However, for me, it's not just the time to make the cab. It's the time to pick out the material. Slab it if it hasn't been slabbed. Pick out the spot on the slab for the preform. Cutting out the preform on the trim saw. Final shaping the preform on the wheels. Letting the super glue set on the dop for 12 hours at least...before I can actually work the cab on the wheels. I cut outside...and the weather hasn't cooperated on my days off...since I have to lug 5 gallon buckets of "warm" water out to the saws to cut in the winter. So...it does take longer than 30-45 minutes to actually MAKE a cab...versus working an preform already on dop. I wouldn't give up on the monthly contests just yet. I think the participation will pick back up... I've always loved the idea of the "champions" contest. Something that promotes a completely level playing field... Whatever the decision...I gotta say "thank you" to you for all you do for the contests. I think a play off is a good idea! I DO TOO!!

Tommy I’d personally hate to see the monthly cab contests halted. My life is extremely busy and this is often the only cab I make in a month. It’s a great incentive to get at least that one done. I have a theme which narrows down my work and gives me a focus and I can just concentrate on the cutting practice. And when 6 months goes by I have at least 6 cabs done as opposed to none. Also because I get so little lapidary time in I’m still learning a little something new or improving my workspace just a little bit more each month. I think maybe people are too worried about submitting a masterpiece. Especially for newer cabbers, it’s such great practice that it doesn’t matter really if it turns out all that great, I guarantee something will have been learned doing it. I try to mention the contest when I see new cabbers show up but that could probably be encouraged more…

For me, the monthly competition gives a good distraction to some tough weeks at work. Also agree on the newer cabbers. When I first joined several years ago it was intimidating to join a contest but then just decided to throw some in the mix and see what happens. I don't have some awesome ideas off hand but would support something to get others submitting entries.

Almost. Maybe next month if I don't have too much going on.

Tommy, I also like the monthly cab contest and want to see it continue as is presently run. I have been retired for many years and always look forward to the next contest as a project. I agree with Jasonsd that the process is more than 45 minutes and my use of the vibe makes it even longer.

Another vote to continue the monthly cab contest. I want to enter and will when possible. I learn from the entries, and will learn more when I do enter. Thanks for running this show.
