Guys, let's not get into it. I see what you mean Chris, but when he said that ugly brown stuff, I didn't take him to denigrating to others.
eta I meant- to BE denigrating to others.

How else is anybody supposed to take that? You stated it’s hard enough for someone like yourself to compete with basic material. So from where I stand, it is the case that you expressed yourself poorly if that wasn’t the intent. At least what I’m assuming You’re saying is your material isn’t good enough and the retarded rectangle cab would take votes away from your material.
To your main point. As far as “ruining” the theme I’m not going to tell you you’re wrong, but you are. I say this respectfully, I think you’re just looking for something to complain about and trying to make it a bigger issue than it really is. For Pete’s sake, if it was that big of an issue from the get go, Tommy didn’t have to include it ya know.

I honestly laughed out loud and got a good chuckle out of the rectangle cab. I personally thought it was quite humorous and a light hearted funny entry (and beautiful).
We are an eccentric group of rock lickers and what defines "art" is ever expanding. The contest is for fun and I always enjoy seeing all the entries. Often times the entries I'd bet to win get dead last. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder and doesn't follow any defined formula.

agatewhisperer - A fantastic and well-deserved win Alex!! Congratulations! Hey thanks! That was a tough theme... The corners kept coming off and my cab got smaller! I enjoyed seeing the other entries as I'm sure others probably ran in to similar issues. And it goes without saying but want to thank Tommy for hosting!!

For as simple as it sounds...I actually thought it was a challenging theme as well. Keeping the symmetry on three sides (versus the "normal" two on symmetrical shapes) is exponentially more difficult. (I feel!) My hat's off to those of you who did get one done. I really intended to...but just couldn't find the time.

Congrats agatewhisperer! Beautiful cab. That's the exact reason I didn't participate lol - I would have had the wonkiest symmetrical triangle ever lol...

Honestly, if time had permitted, a pyramid shape that was a triangle when viewed from the end was on my first list of possibilities, but then I remembered I already did that on a contest that called out center line symmetry on one axis. The competitive part of this is great and should remain, but when we can use the theme to challenge ourselves to do something different than the norm, that's a good thing too. I have also entered a few place takers to increase the voting pool, and been the winner because I was the only entry. The person who originally restarted the contest called it the FCC, fun cab contest. Let's keep it fun. Oh, and congrats to agatewhisperer that was a very nice example of one of my favorite materials.

That was one of the things I thought of right away too, but with this in the rules, "For the purposes of contest consistency, a cabochon should have a visible dome on top and a flat backside." I figured that nixed the idea of an angular top.

I do look back and review the rules on occasion. I've been a little confused on the backlit section and have stretched things a bit on that one. I've had cabs that look like crap without a little bit of light coming through. The definition of backlit is a photo where the primary light is coming from behind. I've taken pictures outside on a piece of glass with the whole thing facing up. The sun is above lighting the front and there is just enough ambient light from the back so you can see the inside of the cab. I don't know if I've done it more than once, but I did it on my Montana Agate heart. This is definitely within the rules as written, hope I'm not stretching too far! What do you think about this Tommy . Another rule to keep in mind. "Community participation and Conflict Resolution: In the interest of preserving contest civility and fairness, please do not post negative comments regarding another member's entry. As always on the forum, polite and respectful dialog and encouragement is welcome in the form of 'likes' and comments. Offering advice or direction about an entry, including whether or not it met the contest theme, is only welcome if the contestant has requested it. In the event of theme-related questions, the person who chose the theme has the final say."

What do you think about this Tommy . When I was selling cabochons my favorites were plume agates which always led to the struggle of taking photos that showcase the internal features - the reasons I made the cabochon in the first place. I employed as many tricks as I could find to do the job without shining a light into it from the back which is as you said by definition back lighting. I actually experimented with back lighting but always thought it made the stone look worse. I couldn't have said it better myself Thanks for the refresher.
