How about something fun & different this month ? !
Create a wire wrap based on some kind of creature. Could be animal, insect, bird, fish, jellyfish, amoeba, anything. Could be a real creature or imaginary, as long as you can convince us it's a creature. It needs to have at least 1 stone involved in the wrap, otherwise anything goes.

Yes! There's one I've already purchased a tutorial for, and I *think* I have an appropriate stone. It was meant to be a gift long ago, but now it will be a gift this month (hopefully).

I'm nearing the finish line, but so nice to have more breathing room, especially when the grass needs to be mowed, weeding needs to be done, huge quantities of catnip need to be removed, etc., etc. There is a *slight* chance that I will finish in May, but it is slight indeed. |

Sounds like you're further along than I am, Susan. But I, for one, would say that the grass could wait.  Weeding the garden, maybe, and I'm sure the cat wouldn't forgive you if the catnip went by  .
Looking forward to seeing what kind of creature you've come up with

I finally finished (sort of) and photographed mine. 18-and 30-gauge copper (and a little 20-gauge), with copper beads. This tutorial (by ArtsvilleHandcrafted) required considerable precision and items that I don't think exist in the U.S. Does anyone know where to find 17-gauge wire? or 2.5 mm copper beads? I sure struck out on both. Here it is, with numerous imperfections, but I'm just happy I survived it. I love it! What a project it was, too. It has so many elements and so many techniques! You pulled out all the stops and did a great job doing it. I love the feathers and the overall bird representation. It's definitely a statement piece.
Yes, tutes with odd sizes are a trick to work out, but your beads and wire gauge look fine to me. Well done. |

I was also drawn to that tut (and purchased it) and haven't gotten the courage to even attempt mine.
But WOW, you nailed it.
I love that it looks great front & back, and I adore the face he has. It's interesting & fun at the same time.
There's a lot going on in that wrap & you pulled it all together quite nicely, even to the beads to hang him from.

As for how long it took, I can only give a wild guess that with the shaping, hammering, filing, weaving, fixing, then fixing again, maybe ten or so hours? My stuff takes longer because I am constantly interrupted by dogs, cats, etc. at whatever I am doing, but that's okay. I may be overestimating, because I found the shaping sufficiently tedious that I would quit after one or two pieces, then come back to it later. |

liveoak rockjunquie, thank you! This wrap is more tedious than difficult, except for setting the stone in. Patty, if you attempt it, use a sloped stone, but not one with the dome as high as the one I used, if you have a choice. This made it especially difficult to center, and impossible to get the middle two tail feathers even with the others. It really does involve a multitude of skills, largely in the shaping of the circular parts, and it has to be fairly precise. But the weaving allows for some necessary "adjustments" in that. If I did it over (which is highly unlikely) I would do larger eyes--my beads were in a package that said 3 mm but I suspect they were only 2 mm. The head is not quite right--a little slanted to the left, but I wasn't about to undo all of the weaving to fix it. The jump rings are closed, so no worries about making them secure. The middle beads in the necklace part and below the fluorite are stardust beads, which I ended up liking. Necklace cord is bolo cord, and I used 18-gauge where the pattern called for 17-gauge. Question for all: The "tufts" over the head are much larger in my rendition than they are in the pattern, but I think I like it that way. I welcome any thoughts, pro or con, on that!
