It's been almost three and half months since I've had any stones tumble out of my polish barrel, but now I'm finally back in business. I was tumbling the entire time, but after finishing up a big backlog this spring of stuff that had accumulated from coarse grind, it was pretty much back to square one - roughing. Anyhow, it's good to be finishing some stones again. This Ocean Jasper was given the slow, gentle treatment. I used plastic pellets to cushion things beginning in coarse grind because OJ can be kind of druzy and I didn't want the druzy parts to chip. So a long slow coarse grind, then 10 days in 120/220, 10 days in 500F, and finally 18 days in polish until the stone surface appeared pretty much perfect through a 10X jeweller's loupe. Here's how they turned out: -Don Thanks for looking! -Don [glow=red,2,300]ADDED JULY 27,2007: (ie, 9 months later):[/glow]This thread was brought back to the top of the board a day or two ago, and someone asked what happened to the tumbled stones above, so I'll freshen things up a bit by adding a couple of pics of these stones as they are displayed. A few stones were given away, but other than that they are all in this dish near my computer, where I can enjoy them often. -Don

Hey Don - There's spots all over them rocks!!! Maybe a Cascade burnish instead of borax would fix that.
Your patience was well rewarded here. Great batch.

Excellent job Don. Looks like the patience and babying them really paid off. I'm not a big fan of OJ, but I'll make an exception for these.

That was superior rough Don. I bet it was hard to just throw them in the barrel.
That, children, is how to tumble rocks!
