Someone sent me this e-mail today. I've been asked to forward it to as many people as I can. What do you guys think? Pass it on...of course, if we really did hurt the oil companies, they'd just raise prices to compensate. S Subject: Gas is way too high! IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES. AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES. THEREFORE SEPTEMBER 1ST HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT UP THEIR @$$ " DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY. THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT. WAITING ON THIS ADMINISTRATION TO STEP IN AND CONTROL THE PRICES IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REDUCTION AND CONTROL IN PRICES THAT THE ARAB NATIONS PROMISED WEEKS AGO? REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH AFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE SEPTEMBER 1ST A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" PLEASE FORWARD THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU CAN!!!! My 15 gallon tank now costs me $45 to fill. Here's an interesting link that Isaac from nattywraps has on his site www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.netThere's only so many dead dinosaurs, folks.

$45 !!!!! thats about £30. I would be a very happy bunny if it cost £30 to fill my tank. Uk prices are currently at about 98p a LITRE. It costs around £45 - £50 to fill our car up!

Rose, 98p/litre... yikes, that's about Cdn $2/litre. We are paying about half that right now, so I guess I should be thankful, even though it still seems pricy.
NMR, that scheme (and several variations on it) have been around for at least 10 years. It is flawed on several fronts:
...it is only if you stopped USING gas for a day that it would have any impact. Simply not buying it means nothing. So you buy it the day before or after Sept. 1, what do the oil companies care?... they still sell the same amount of gas over the course of year, and pay their employess the same annual salary. Net result...zero.
...even if we stopped using gasoline entirely for one day (and that would mean not just cars, but also buses and trucks transporting goods, etc.... that would still be only 1/365 of the oil companies sales for the year... less than one third of one percent. That's not much of an impact, especially compared to something like what is happening in New Orleans right now.
...even if the scheme managed to drop gas prices for a day or a week or several weeks, what would stop the oil companies from raising prices after awhile to make up for the lost profits?
One variation of this scheme that was proposed maybe 5 years ago did seem a bit more feasible. It suggested that people should target one major oil company (if I recall correctly it was Esso/Exxon/Imperial), and that people refuse to buy gas from that company until the price dropped to some specified level. The idea was that this would allow people to continue to buy gas for their needs from other stations, while shunning this one major company for as long as it took to drop their prices to the specified level. This would force the company to cave in, which would then force its competitors to match the price. Sounds good, but getting people to commit to this would be the big problem I think.

I don't disagree. But it's a nice thought, everyone not buying gas AND not driving...I'll be biking it that day. Unfortunately, oil is a limited commodity, and "they" have us by the balls. (those of us who have balls). S

My motorhome has a 90 gallon tank. That's one reason it's sitting in my driveway.

We the consumers need to figure out a way to force the auto industry to come up with more of the alternative fuel cars like the Preis ( sp?) Its a hard question with no easy answers. I personally will be checking into buying a moped, as I only live 10 min or so from my job by vehicle.

Actually, Ron, I'm looking at doing exactly THAT - not necessarily a Harley, though. I can't even pick one up. S

Hey Susan, I have a friend that has to really stretch to stand 5 feet who rides a Softtail Deluxe. You can put a lowering kit on and it isn't so bad. As far as the weight, I have several friends that can't lift their bikes as well. Unfornately, my MS has put those days behind me. I fall down when I'm just walking, let alone riding a bike.
Ron
ps Handy when I'm drinking though. I walk a straight line the same sober or drunk!

Hahaha, Ron - In 1994 I went to Chick Hancock's Harley Davidson here in Albq. Couldn't decide whether to buy a Honda Civic or a Harley Fatboy (really wanted the Fatboy...at that time they cost about the same). Chick laid one down on the ground and told me, "Sue, if you can pick it up, I'll sell it to ya". Needless to say, I ended up with the Civic - best car I ever had. Wish I still had it, as it got 38 - 44 mpg. I love my Tacoma, but it only gets 22 mpg, 25 on a good day. As far as your Harley days being over, teach your wife to ride, and you can sit behind and relaaaaaax. S

Harley- Oh that's a good one- The neigbotr just got one- (mid life crisis) Sold his 3 snowmobiles, his camper, his truck, and some other toys he had- Rides it up and down the road on SUndays- Last week they put down fresh stone on a cross road- and he hit it (going slow) and had it slide right out from under him! Not to bad- only a couple thou in damage (he walked away from the whole thing) But I see he just got a new Harley! I said man how can you afford it- He just smiled and mummbled "I can't" Plus they don't make tire chains for a Harley! Susan- My friends dad had a Police Special that he used to do that with (we wanted to ride and he would lay er down and say- set it up and you can ride) Never could do it-

Holy Crap! RS just mentioned that we're paying less than $1/liter her in Canada this morning and it's already at $1.249 her in the nation's capital - more than that in Montreal! I saw it at $1.016 this AM and decided to wait before filling it up - big mistake! think I should wait till the light comes on before getting gas?

i tried to learn how to ride a 750 Yamaha when i was a lot younger, i was OK until i had to stop and then i could hardly lean it over and not fall over. i guess i'd had too many friends wind up in the hospital or morgue and decided two wheels was not for me.
this gas price thing is going to get ugly. i remember the mid 70's rationing and odd-even days you could get gas....i sure hope it doesn't come to that again.

In GA, you can't wait that long. Currently, gas is 2.90 to 3.10 a gallon (American). Most of the stations are out of gas and won't have more untill Monday. I didn't know about the crisis, just needed to gas up bad, and waited at a station for about 30 mins. The price changed while I was in line from $2.79 to $3.00 a gallon. Scary times ahead.

The worse thing here in Canada is that the "Canadian Station" (Petro Canada) is the first ones to raise their prices and they're the only station where they could accommodate the dollar amount into their signs. They keep the prices high and their petrol comes from Canadian soil - we shouldn't be affected by the oil prices elsewhere! But dear ole Petro Canada just sucks big time - Canadian station my A$$!
