The photo NMrocks posted of the torn up/stitched up dog says it all right there. That turned my stomach. I don't care if you are a dog lover or not, if you like pitbulls or not, that is pure insanity! Yes, that does go on in the wild, but that all has to do with survival of the fittest, not for fun or sport. Anyone that condones that kind of sport is evil. It is not a "mistake". It is a choice, regardless of your upbringing or whatever else people are trying to justify it by.
I don't particularly care for pitbulls, either. I have seen on several occasions unprovoked pitbulls attacks on other dogs, so even if pitbulls are raised by a loving family and are well behaved, I personally think there's still instinct and genetics that play a large role in when they do attack. They were bred for a specific job as I'm sure it was needed. But the thugs that use them for dogfighting have discovered that this breed is perfect for that and have ruined the breed both in reputation and genetics.
It has been mentioned that humans choose to go into the ring and fight (boxing, ultimate fighting, martial arts, etc.), but, it's their choice; they aren't forced into it, and there are rules and referees that monitor and enforce the rules. I bet you there aren't any rules in dogfighting! The dogs don't know to stop when the bell rings at the end of the round. The dog doesn't know to not bite the other dog's carotid artery or the groin. He instinctly fights to the death.
Vick is paying way too high of a price for his crime? I disagree. See that picture of the dog? What if that was your child or a loved one or even your own pet that was attacked by one of HIS dogs? If they survived, they would be maimed and disfigured for life. In promoting dogfighting, they, too, are promoting dogs that terrorize and kill not only other dogs, but people, too. (And note, I said "dogs", not pitbulls, as there are other breeds that are bred to fight, too).
I don't feel sorry for Vick one bit. He made his choice, now he has to live with it. I feel sooo bad for you that you won't be able to make millions and millions of dollars for running round throwing a ball. As for him finding Jesus? Only God knows if he truly has found him. And he will have to answer to him someday if he lied about it.

Shannon, thanks for your insight and obvious experience with all types of dogs. I am always amazed, too, when people don't understand why dogs do what they do. When Earthdog and I decided we wanted to get a dog, and read about Jack Russells, we knew exactly what we were getting ourselves into and what to expect. I think our Lacy is an exception, but our newest female, Sadie, is a handful! But because we researched the breed, we have prepared ourselves for their behaviors. I had considered a Border Collie and did read about the nipping that they do. I didn't have small children, so it wouldn't have been an issue, but I do understand why they do it! Actually, I think it's kind of neat to know why your dog does what it does both from instinct from wolves and what trait was bred into them (retrieving, pointing, herding, getting rid of rodents, etc.). Sadie gets so intense looking for mice in our backyard. She will go and go. If I let her off the leash, there's no way I can catch her until she's exhausted herself running around. I know there are many people who love their pit bulls and in turn their pit bulls are loving family dogs. I personally have not owned one so I obviously am not in a position to pass judgment, but I have witnessed the bad side of them as I stated in my previous post, so I'm not going to own one in the near future. If you didn't see the recent news story that was captured on video in Milwaukee about 4 pit bulls attacking a janitor that was leaving the news station......she was attacked, unprovoked! They were able to catch 2 of them, but they ended up tazering the others. Here's a link: www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/9052611.htmlAnyway, this, too, is also just my humble opinion, not meant to offend or put down anyone.

takila:
You mentioning your Jack Russell made me want to mention one of my dogs. She is a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Originally they were trained to hunt lions. Not to kill them, but to hold them at bay so the hunters could kill them.
That was way back when..............now to our Ridgeback, Jade. She has an insane fetish for cats. And our cat loves to torment her by walking just out of reach of her run. When we let her off her run or out of her outdoor kennel, she takes off after the cat and then circles him and wont let him move. She never attacks, she just "holds him at bay" just like Ridgebacks used to do. The only difference is her prey has shrunk from a lion to a domesticated house cat LOL.
We have a Jack mix also. He is Jack Russell/Mini Australian Shepherd mix and he is INSANE. He is the craziest dog with a brain the size of a pea. And he has attention deficit I swear. But I love him to death. I will post a photo of him sometime. He has a 2 inch long foo man chu and a mohawk that I keep clipped and scissored. Jack Russells can be nuts but you cant beat their personalities. His name is Buckshot.

Your dogs sound cool, Shannon! We say the same thing about our JRT, Sadie, that she has ADHD! LOL! When I'm not outside to monitor her, I put her on a clothes line leash where she can still move around quite a bit, but keep her restrained. A few times I went out to check on her and she was gone! Actually, she had dug her way under the fence and was still attached to the lead, but on the other side! So as you can imagine, I was very glad that she was hooked up! She is a runner (why her original owners got rid of her), so we do have to be very diligent about keeping the front door and back gate shut, keeping her on the leash, etc. She's taken off a few times, but luckily, we found her.
Like I said before, it's cool to see dogs "work" instinctly! Like your dog, Jade, circling your cat! Or our JRT's hunting for mice. My dad used to breed Bouviers and they used to head-butt you for attention.

"Don't know" looks a lot like Mother Goose's Grimm from the Comic Strips.
It's a great editorial cartoon! Would that it were real!

I recognized all of them, but couldn't come up with Grimm's name! I loved Ren & Stimpy when it was on TV. Happy Happy Joy Joy......................
Funny cartoon! And Ren would probably be the meanest doggie of all!

I hope this man gets a fair trial, just like in the cartoon Susan posted. This was my dog Ceazar, he used to love to pose for the camera. He would let me dress him up in whatever I wanted to then take pictures before he'd get bored enough to wander off. I think he liked wearing the hat and glasses though, not too sure about the wig. His favorite toy was an old chewed up tennis shoe. ![](http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/rare_earth_treasures/DSCN5930.jpg) ![](http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/rare_earth_treasures/DSCN5929.jpg) ![](http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/rare_earth_treasures/DSCN5917.jpg) This was his "I'm fat but cute" look. ![](http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/rare_earth_treasures/DSCN5920.jpg) I brought home part of a root that looked like a dinosaur. I built a little rickety cage, put a chain around it and hooked the chain to the cage, then we posted "Beware Of Stick" signs in the back yard by the cage. Ceazar was so jealous of the stick because we had made a fuss over it, he used to crawl into the little cage and sleep with the stick, he could barely fit but thats where I'd find him if he was in the back yard. You can see the dinosaur stick in the background in this picture, not much room in the cage for the dog, but he managed. ![](http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l224/rare_earth_treasures/DSCN5919.jpg)
