I went on ONE rockhounding trip, maybe when I was 8 years old! I also haven't been on vacation in about 6 years... crazy as it sounds, I'm thinking that I'd like to go too!! Oh, the rock sounds so amazing, even though I don't feel comfortable sawing anything bigger than my Workforce can handle. As a complete rookie, and on top of that not a real camper, do you think I'd do okay? Will there be any chance to find some of the blue/greens that you're famous for?

If anyone from around Sacramento/Bay Area is planning on driving and wants to carpool, pm me! We can save on gas and share driving!

Quick question, when I do searches for burro creek through mapping sites, it shows 3. One is south of phoenix, one is north west and one is east. Which Burro Creek?

Try searching blm.gov/az, then click on (I think its) projects, in the column on the left hand side of the page, then scroll down until you see another list and click on camping. This list is in the middle of the page. Then on the camping page in the first or second paragraph it says DEVELOPED CAMPGROUNDS in green letters? I think... Anyway click on that and then look for burro creek.

Yes, i am definitly going to be there Jamie, just need to work out a couple things before i can say for how long, and if i can pick anyone up, or have room for a carpool. I havent spoke with Mike & Jolene yet about the trip, but i am sure they will be there as well. Most likly we three will carpool it. Here are some more links for anyone that wants them. www.blm.gov/az/kfo/burrocr.htmwww.arizonalodging.com/attractions/burro_creek.htmlwww.swxrflab.net/burrocr.htmwww.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34.538000&lon=-113.449000&size=l&u=5This is a map to Burro Creek Campground. Anyone can use it to get the driections they may need, no matter were they are coming from. tinyurl.com/364zb2(the url is long so i made it tiny) As far as the sites, the thing is the burro creek area has so many spots to find and dig, we could spend months there and only hit 1/10 of them. Would like to hunt those Garnets up there, and maybe even try to hit the Bagdad area for copper quantoms. The woodruff site is good for wood no dout. And i thought the AZ tiger eye was South of the upper Salt. If so, we are all looking at some seaious driving times. With camping and rock hammer, driving that kind of distance may be a wear for most folks, including me. More so for the folks driving in from outta state. Having a west and east site option is good i feel. becasue each person or group may fit better into one site and timeline, than the other. I can say for certain i will be there at Burro Creek, but i highly dout i will be there for Woodruff. I would love to work out with anyone a backpacking trip for one night while there are BC. Maybe even hunt around the Santa Maria River and down to Anderson as Mel noted. Ive heard theres some fine Blue chalcedony around Santa Maria, but never collected any. So if anyone is up for a backpacking trip while there, lets talk. And thank you so much for the work of putting this together Jamie, you are a doll and we all love ya.

I plan on coming for the entire duration to enjoy the company of everyone who can make it.(and to collect some fine AZ rocks)
Dee, I may decide to drive since you mentioned you would like someone to ride with.
This is all depending on whether or not my wife and I buy a house between now and then. I'm afraid if we do get lucky and are able to afford to buy a house, I won't be able to afford to go to AZ or WWR next year, but I'll let you know.

Awesome! Depending on your housing, of course. I could do it on my own, but I'm afraid I'd be toast and need a day to recover after a drive like that! With that in mind, Freeform, I kind of like the idea of 'east and west' options. I could easily plant myself at Burro Creek and spend all the days there! It sounds amazing...

I think I would have to agree with you Shain, perhaps that would be the best way to plan this trip. I am having a difficult time finding a place for all of us to lodge up near Woodruff.
I may have to look into finding some worthy hunting spots a bit closer to Burro Creek that are just as plentiful as the pet wood areas. This would also eliminate having to tear down and set up camp again. I have already talked to one of the staff at the Bagdad mine and was told I could arrange to have an escort take us across the property that the mine sits on so we could use that route to get to upper Burro Creek, (More Rockhunting). I just need to call and make those arrangements prior to us heading to Burro Creek. Dee, yes we had planned on trying to get a chrysocolla location worked into the trip.

Hey Ed, I hope you get lucky and get to but a house! That's great! We'll start a "send Stoner to Arizona" collection jar if we have to. Dee, Ed, I'll be flying out and renting a car (4by hopefully) upon arrival. If anyone from around the SF Bay Area wants to fly instead and wants to coordinate flights, we can drive together. I may be going to the primary meeting place then taking off to Cottonwood to drop my wife off if she doesn't want to come along then returing, but it should work out. Please note that I may not be around for the whole trip as I will be visiting my mom also. Oh, but she has expressed interest in rocks recently too. Steve

I'm still thinking of driving, when I did a quick look at tickets, they would cost the same as gas, and I wouldn't have to worry about shipping my rocks back home! But I'll keep it in mind!

We just got home from Burro Creek, it was fantastic!!! Went to the campground to check it out and it is a perfect spot, very large ramada in the group camp site, 5 or 6 picnic tables with built in benches, drinking fountains, fresh water taps through out the entire campground, a dump station, trails to the creek, a nice little desert garden with cacti and the surrounding desert is so beautiful.... We found some of the coolest spots today, forgot to take the camera but we plan to go back to scout the south side of the bridge in just a few days.
Pictures in just a few of what we hauled home today.......You won't believe this boulder we dug up....

is the road southwest out of the campground open to the public? It looks like its connects up to 17mile road which is near Anderson mine? 4x4 for sure from the looks on the map.

These are the pictures of the stuff we brought home from Burro Creek today, our trip made me wish this fall trip was starting next week. We did a lot of driving and most of the dirt roads have all been freshly graded so it didn't take us long to get around. We started out at the campground and made our way down one of the trails that lead to the creek. The creek is only a few yards from the camping sites and there is several well beaten paths that take you right to it. As soon as we made it down into the wash we started finding agates in many different colors. We have never stayed at the campground or even really done any hunting in that area because the locations we usually hunt are 10 to 15 miles away from the BLM campground. Anyway, we wanted to find out if there would be anything worth while to look for right at the campground, just in case some people wanted to hang at camp instead of trekking all over the desert and we found so much stuff we couldn't carry it all back with us. There was agate and jasper in all kinds of varieties and colors from the time we hit the creek, all the way to the bridge and beyond. This first set of pictures are of the agates we collected on foot by the campground. These are the hearts I just had to pick up. This is the stuff we collected further up the creek, near the magnesite mines. This is some really cool stuff Rodney found! This is one of my favorites from that area, I only have about 50 favorites from that spot. Last but not least, this is what we stumbled onto while we were checking out a really cool canyon, (looking for a big pool to swim in). We used our bar and shovel to break off the big piece. Took us maybe an hour to collect the stuff we got at the first place and not even 30 minutes to fill the rest of the truck with this lavender stuff. Unfortunately, these pictures don't even do the rocks any justice. PLan on taking the camera with us in a day or two so I can post pictures of the hunting sites, its hard to describe but the amount of good material that is out there is unbelievable. At a few of the spots it will take less than 30 minutes to fill a 5 gallon bucket, and if you are in a hurry, you could easily do it in 5 minutes.

Shain, there is a gate with a "Posted, no tresspassing sign" on the road that you are asking about, the ranch is just beyond the gate but I bet we might be able to get permission to use the road to get to the Anderson Mine if I can find out who owns the property...... Will add that to my to do list.
