Is it a rock strainer sitting over a drain? Dump the rocks in, and rinse them off, water and grit drains right out?

IF NOT
Is this at least an everyday item that we should all be familiar with? If this is something that you snuck out of the hangar at Roswell, you can understand why we are not coming close.
