Wow!!! Really? Thanks everyone! I looked back over John's last 100 posts and thought I found when he first left, but didn't know how long it took him to get to Calais. I figured it was around 50 days give or take, and then just kept taking shots around that number, albeit redundantly, LOL.
OMG, I can't imagine taking 47 days to get somewhere on a bike. Holy tenacity!
I'm gonna refrain from guessing for the rest of the contest, but will be watching because I'm really curious how many miles he traveled in those 47 days. Good luck everyone! Thanks Adrian, and thanks John for this contest! Jo

Jo, I think you should have first choice of the prize since you had the first correct answer, congrats. Adrian this is miles not kilometers? I finally looked at that map and all I can say is holy crap that was far! But what wonderful sites he must be seeing. I am going to guess 1781 miles.

Okay, I'm not guessing anymore, so I thought I'd give everyone a little help. These are the guesses we have so far for the number of miles: 1120 1165 1169 1296 1428 1446 1454 1457 1482 1493 1499 1500 1500 1552 1580 1609 1638 1638 1640 1645 1650 1655 1672 1675 1682 1694 1726 1750 1781 1833 1853 1940 2115 2350 2498 2650 2800 The clues we have are: John rode from Calais, France to Bucharest, Romania through two mountain ranges and passed through Beograd/Belgrade, Serbia in 47 days. and Europe is a small continent, but not THAT small! If you are using a mapping program like Google Maps, here is a km to miles conversion engine to help: www.escapeartist.com/Conversions/Miles_Kilometer_Conversion/Keep guessing and let's get some new members guessing too. Good luck everyone! Jo

Hey, well I'm finally on line yet gain. Sorry it has taken me so long, and many many thanks to Adrian for keeping this going.
I'm very tired at the moment, so I won't stay long ... even I need my sleep. LOL
Well I think it is just over a week since I left Bucharest. Only Adrian knows which way I'm heading, and give or take a few wrong turns I've managed to cover just over 300 miles.
Today was a real bummer of a day, my first 11 miles was pushing the bike up hill (well over a mountain really) but the next 13 miles were a cinch, although my hands were aching and I had to stop a few times. Hard gripping on the bakes for a 13 mile down hill stretch certainly does make your hands ache.
I'll come back online tomorrow to check out the distances and maybe give a few clues.
ADRIAN - I had to take the long way round in the end. 100 kms extra, but the riding was easier.
Headed down the way we discussed and apart from the mountains that had to be crossed (today) things have gone well. I'm 2 days ride from my next place, and looking at the map it seems to be on a level pain.
Will message you later my friend.

OK, as Adrian is doing such a fine job of keeping you all guessing while I'm just lazing around all day doing nothing I think it is time for a little help.
I have a large paper map of Europe. What I did was draw a straight line direct from Calais in France to Bucharest in Romania. For the first half of the journey I tried as much as possible to stick the the line - so where the line crossed a town then I headed towards that town. At Passau in Austria I picked up the Donau Radweg and followed that as much as possible, only on occasion diverting to save time and effort following oxbows and long bends.
Thats enough for now, LOL, don't want to give away too much.
Laters people :-)
