5 rpm is slow but good , im at 4 1/2 , slow but smooth cut . dont think that would change the power

I think it does change the power, but to what degree I don't know. I believe it's the same principal as putting a longer handle on a wrench to get more torque on it. I'll have to dig a little and figure it out.

If you put a pulley system on , you will be cutting too slow, take alot ot time to cut . i have my saw tilted slightly from front to back to make it easier on my gear to pull the carrige downhill

Sorry, no updates. I walk past it every time I go into the garage, and keep thinking I gotta get working on it again. I have a trip out west in a few weeks, then hopefully after that I can get working on it again.
Thanks for the kick in the butt lol.

Yes, a larger pulley than what's on the motor slows it down and increases power. Think go-kart.
As far as slip clutches go i've built them with lock washers pushing up against larger flat washers, Steve Covington told me how to do it but hard to explain.
It depends on how unforgiving your nut that drives the vise is. Will it slip, or bind? You can test it by block the carriage with something other than your blade. But don't get mad at me if it screws up your threads lol which it might do if it's a really powerful grip.
I have 2 ideas, one I used which is just a springed metal clamp that I weld a nut in it then cut it in half. I don't think it has enough grip to bind a blade but it will drive a vise. The other is from an old Mojave saw I seen. The gearmotor wasn't mounted to the saw box just the threaded shaft. It had a arm mounted on the gearmotor which went to a switch. If the vise binded the gearmotor would start floating upwards and that arm would flip the switch off.

If your gearmotor doesn't work for around $50 you can order them from www.mcmaster.com/. I've seen them push rocks on a 36" saw. Of course they were vises on wheels not metal to metal shafts. Oh and btw.........last time I looked at a Lortone saw there was no slip clutch that I recall. You can get by without one just don't run off and leave your saw alone.

Just fyi I wouldn't advise slowing your 4rpm motor down, it will be too slow. I understand you think it might not be powerful enough, if it isn't a saw cutting 2" per hour wouldn't be a good trade off. I don't care to figure it out at the moment I drank too much beer last night but if you know the number of threads per inch of your drive rod and the gearmotor rpm you can figure out the rate of cut.

the only other possible problem, and I might have missed if it was already figured out, is that you said the motor reversed when you grabbed it with pliers..... If your rock weight, which adds drag, ie; downward pressure, to the vise carriage, combined with the amount of friction of the sled moving over square steel shafts of the vise carriage, and, if with the added resistance of the saw blade spinning against the rock is great enough.... boy was that a mouthful !! , it might exceed the power of the motor and cause it to reverse, thereby not doing more than scratching the rock. Does that make sense??? it seemed to me to make sense when I thought about it at the time. I don't have a rock saw, never did and I too am taking it all in to see about building 1 for myself at some time. Dows anyone know if a box made of aluminium would work instead of wood which is then sealed with cloth & rosin or fiberglass??

Time to resurrect this beast. Imbarassingly enough I never went any farther on it. I plan to dig it out in the next few days and finish it.
I do have one question... Will a 1/2 hp motor be strong enough for this saw?
Thanks, Nate

I just read the entire thread to get the perspective, and like Ed am anxious to see the product. I have a vice (homemade) that may need to be renovated eventually so all info is of potential use in the future. Tom

I got everything dug out. Finished a few welds on the vice I missed previously & now it's time to figure out rollers for the vice & rails for it to roll on.

Tonight I dug the bearings out of an old set of rollerblades my daughters outgrew. Will try getting them assembled in the vice carriage tomorrow.

Got the bearings on the vice and the rails built. It's just all set together in this pic. Tomorrow I'll finish the welds on the rails and get them mounted.

Hi Mark, things are good. I hope all's well with you too!
I only got a little time this weekend to work on the saw. This afternoon I got the rails all welded up and bolted in. I'm off tomorrow so I should get several things done.
I'm having trouble sourcing a motor. I'm not paying for a brand new one, so I'll be patient.
Is a 1/2 hp motor sufficient for a 16" saw or would 3/4 or even 1 hp be better?

Scored a 1hp motor for $20 today! My dad had a 5" pulley for me so I ran over there & picked it up. Got a 2" on the motor, so on my 16" blade that gives me around 635 fpm.
I'm on the home stretch now. A few details to finish up and soon I'll be cutting!
