My build is temporarily on hold. My wife very kindly shared the flu with me, and I can barely find the strength to tap on my keyboard. Oh well, by the time this bug is gone all of my parts should be here. My T-nuts and cap screws arrived from 8020 Inc. today, but my T-slot rails didn't come with them, so I just sent them an email, asking about their status. My gearmotors are on their way from surplus center, and a metal shop in town has the 1/4" X 4" aluminum cut and ready for pickup for the motor mounts. Found a machinist in town who will make my shaft adapters for me at a decent price, so hopefully by the weekend I'll have some pics to share.

I could not find any chain or springs in my packrat piles so I had to buy new ones at the store.
Does anyone know what type of connector fits on the capacitor tabs?
Does anyone use a diamond core drill bit to cut their sphere preforms? After the first drilling pass, it seems you have to turn the core sample sideways and then put it in a v jig of some sort and drill another pass. Can't quite picture what this v jig looks like.

It would have to be a jig that sits at 90 deg. to the first cut. By rotating the stone a few degrees at a time, a person would end up with a near perfect sphere. But clamping the thing would be a real nightmare to figure out.
I'll bet if you took a capacitor to an electronic supply place, they could hook you up with the right connectors.

Contacted 8020 Inc. yesterday, and got an email apology this morning. Someone in shipping forgot to send the shipping info to me. My T-slot rails will be here today. For anyone wanting to build one of these using the T-slot rails, 8020 Inc. www.8020.net/T-Slot-4.asp Has lots of offcuts from their manufacturing processes that are sold at a good discount. Just the fact that they got back to me so quickly leads me to believe they are a good company to do business with. Don

Rails arrived this afternoon. The way I plan to set this thing up, it will fit in a base slightly smaller than 2' X 2'. Gonna be fairly compact. Electrical connectors for the motors shipped this afternoon. Don't think I want to cut that big sheet of phenolic for the base. Guess I'll check around for a counter top offcut.

You might do some checking for replaced cutting board pieces, my wife gets them from the store she works at. Generally pays 5$ for 3 or 4 pieces of 5/8" thick plastic, 2ft. square, that is really tough, and easy to clean. I cut them up for tumbler barrel end caps.

Too late. Went out today and bought my base material. Motors will be here tomorrow. I should be able to start building this weekend. As I said in an earlier post, I was thinking about using heavy duty spring loaded door hinges instead of springs across the top. I just ordered 3 of them. They'll be here Saturday, so we'll see how my idea works. The hinge tension is adjustable, and hinges are needed at the bottom of the motor mounts, so why not give it a try ? At worst, I can release all of the tension and use them like normal hinges. At best, it will be a cleaner, more streamline design.

Justin Hey Justin, my motors arrived today. The connectors you need are the same as used around the fuse block on your car. Just plain old push on spade lugs. There are 2 or 3 different widths of them, so take a capacitor with you when you go to get them. Don't know why the capacitors have 2 connectors on each side. You only need to use 1 on each side. Now I know where they got all of those surplus motors. They're take offs from old Zerox machines. Don

I took the capacitor to the hardware store and found the spade connectors. Thanks! I was wondering where they came up with the surplus motors.
I should have used a more flexible wiring but it should work for now and I can change it if necessary. I'm going to try and put everything in a plastic box and attach the chains/springs this weekend. Hopefully I'll have the machine running and grind my first sphere this weekend as well.

Cool. Wanna see pics of it all finished.
With a little luck I'll get started on my build this weekend. I'll take pics from start to finish and post them. Wife doesn't know I'm building it yet. UPS got here with the motors about a half hour before she got home from work. I had to unpack them and get them hidden real quick. lol

I have to do the same thing sometimes but in this case, the machine build is spread out all over my garage. My wife is OK as long as the stuff is on my side of the garage and she can park her car on her side. I haven't parked inside for a year or so with all my various projects. I wish I had a separate shop or 3 car garage.

It's nice to see your builds are coming together. Make sure to put up lots of pics when they are finished and you get some spheres made. My motors should be here sometime next week but i've already got a good pile of parts scrounged up in preperation for my build. Looks like i will need to buy one more hinge and the bells for the grinding cups but other than that i think i have everything else to build it laying around here.

It's gonna cost me in the end. When it's built and the wife sees it, she's gonna want to know how much it cost to build. Then she'll go out and buy another new sewing machine of equal or greater value Don You crack me up! ARGH !!! Gonna be a little delay on the build. Went to pick up my cut pieces of aluminum flat bar this morning. Luckily I took a tape measure and square with me. Not a single piece was cut to the right length, and not a single piece was cut square. Made them give my deposit back, and ordered some flat bar from 8020 Inc. Should be here in about a week, and I'll cut it myself. At least I can get started on the base and rails. Bought a 2' square of 3/4" marine plywood for the base. I'll start on that this afternoon.

Hi Don,
I am running the same motors on my machine, the cap's never even get luke warm after running all day. I wonder if you even need the caps, i tried running the motors without them and they started up and ran fine. I am sure you would need them if the there was enough of a load at start up.

In another thread, someone mentioned starting several motors using one capacitor. Wish I could remember which thread it was. I have a small 110 V. muffin fan somewhere in the basement. I'm going to go a little overkill and use it. I'm also going to leave about an inch of space between my capacitors for air flow.

The capacitors for these motors are start capacitors. Yes, the motors will run and even start fine without them - HOWEVER without the capacitors it is 50/50 at each start as to which direction (cw or ccw) they will run.
I have my capacitors in waterproof electric boxes. In 3 years I have yet to have a capacitor go bad. I did have one motor go bad, which given the environment (wet and gritty) and using 25 year old surplus motors removed from service probabily isn't too bad. You may want to get an extra motor as a spare. There were only a finite number of old copy machines torn down for parts.

Finally starting to beat the flu, and decided to get started on my machine. Let me tell you, that 6105-T5 aluminum extrusion is some tough material. Couldn't leave clear enough lines with my scribe, so had to spray on layout ink. Finally have all 3 rails center punched and ready for drilling and counter sinking.

Don - Can't wait to see pictures.
I haven't had time yet to install the chains/springs and clean up the wiring. I installed the 1-3/8" diamond core drills and I think they should work well for around a 2" sphere.
