**Edited - sorry, am changing this into just postings of your favorite rock, not a contest anymore.
What's YOUR FAVORITE rock SLAB of ALL TIME?
The point of this thread is ROCK CANDY!!!!
If possible, list what it is, where it came from, and maybe why you like it (color pattern rarity etc). This is meant to be a slobber thread that we can all learn from, maybe see something new, be amazed at, and have something to strive to own someday!
Just curious what everyone's 'dream' rock is that we want and would like to own someday:).

Those are definitely "rock candy!" Yum!! Not actually a "slab," so I hope this little Carnelian cobble is okay. Won this piece from rocks2dust. I love the color of the unpolished carnelian cobble with the opalized areas and the white plumes in it. Carnelian Cobble with Opal from Oregon Capturing the sunlight Plume Zoom-in

That one was face polished by the guy I got it from. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have 8 more, straight from the collector on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation. Almost virgin hunting grounds that us pale faces can't hunt on.

Kewl:). But I think luck is involved there too.
Maybe this contest should be your favorite rock that you own?? Not a whole lot of interest... I just want to see what people's idea of a GREAT rock looks like:).

Well, I can't do much with slabs as I don't have a decent saw, but I do have rocks with color - so deduct points - I'm just posting pictures of things that made me go ahhhhh: So let me put on my thinking cap: Treasure of a $1/lb estate sale: Dino bone: Or prizes of a $2/lb agate bin: Before: After: Too pricey? How about an estate given away to the members of our club: But what if you don't have cash: Traded 150 lbs of rough for: (don't argue - I love this stone....my wife hated the space the rough took up...) Fine, no money and don't want to part with rocks? ...Favorite self-collected tegg from Hauser. Favorite self-collected plume from near Afton Canyon: But seriously - I don't hold a candle to two of our members: Dan Heuer and Bob Rush. I'd list a bunch of their old posts, but that would be cheating.....(If you have their Artists of Agate portfolios I put together a while back - and need to repost with new download instructions - you will see what I mean...) Thanks for the fun time, Helen, you're an awesome artist! Lowell

I am not really a black lover but this black agate is the s##t. Best stone that I have self collected but there are a few others that are a close second, third and so on. I am very lucky to have so many rocks at my disposal. I could probably post a stone of just about every color there is and many shades of each but this one is the top knot for me. Sorry but I could not pass up another chance to show "Jim's pink agate" that I self collected and named. It has to be right on top with the black agate. Jim

My second favorite would have to be Biggs picture jasper. Not a good pic. I'll try to replace it with a better one later. This is such a fine specimen that I hate to cut it. Maybe one day, but for now it's a shelf sitter.

WOW! What an insightful thread!!!! I had this idea that most people would post ebay or website collection or museum pieces type wish list slabs... but this is turning out way more interesting!!
Obviously we already have whole rocks, so just throw the slab rule out the window, I just didn't want people to post a crystal specimen with little spikes, or whole petrified wood logs to compare - tho after thinking about it... why not? If you love whole petrified wood logs BEST, show us! This is YOUR favorite rock.
Love looking at the entries, Lowell's was really neat, already learned something about agates from looking at the rough and how they could polish (that 2nd laker... omg, and the 150 lb trade? Depends on what you traded, but I might have done it too:)) and Bill, that's a heck of a dream, but how would you cut it:P?
Jim, that black/yellow rock is wild looking! Can you take a better lit picture of the slab so we can see it better? Backlit is hard to see. The whole rock tho is WOW!
Don, that's a beauty... dunno that I could bring myself to cut that giant biggs either:).
About photography... I find taking pix in shade outside with the sun out the best colors and accuracy. Under a tree, on a porch, etc. Indoor lighting is always tricky with the color distortions. The sun doesn't actually have to be out, cloudy days sometimes work better for color, depending on what you are shooting:).
I'm going to comment less and look more, I just wanted to help the thread get started:).

Helen, I took the Biggs pic about a year ago, wet and using flash instead of overhead daylight bulbs. I put the rock away for safe keeping, and will dig it out so I can get a better pic.

Sorry, no can do. First of all the slab not back lit is just a shiny black and the swirls can not be seen. Second problem is I gave it away. I cut three slabs off of that stone and I have given all of them away. I have a better photo of the whole rock but I am having trouble finding it. Jim

I don't have a lot of rocks, but I have a crap ton of cabs. I wouldn't be able to pick just one anyway.
