I want open research again, exactly like the NIH has, like this: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html
Exactly like the Endowment of the Arts has, like this: www.nea.gov/grants/index.html
Exactly like NASA USED to have. Submit to us your GENIUS idea, our board of scientists will look at it and decide if it's worth giving you money to study it for the betterment of the nation.
Some guy issued a 10 million dollar challenge a few years ago, can you build a small thingie that goes to space?
"The Ansari X Prize was a space competition in which the X Prize Foundation offered a US$10,000,000 prize for the first non-government organization to launch a reusable manned spacecraft into space twice within two weeks. It was modeled after early 20th-century aviation prizes, and aimed to spur development of low-cost spaceflight.
Created in May 1996 and initially called just the "X Prize", it was renamed the "Ansari X Prize" on May 6, 2004 following a multi-million dollar donation from entrepreneurs Anousheh Ansari and Amir Ansari.
The prize was won on October 4, 2004, the 47th anniversary of the Sputnik 1 launch, by the Tier One project designed by Burt Rutan and financed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, using the experimental spaceplane SpaceShipOne. $10 million was awarded to the winner, and more than $100 million was invested in new technologies in pursuit of the prize.
Several other X Prizes have since been announced by the X Prize Foundation, promoting further development in space exploration and other technological fields."

6 MONTHS from the time the challenge was updated, it was accomplished. With incentive and money, almost nothing can't be done today. We have the tools, we have the computers, we have the brains.
Can we find alternative energy, a BETTER way to harness the sun, the wind, the water already on earth? Yes we can.
Every year we give oil companies billions and billions of free money. They donate a few million to their Republican toadies each, and get back 10x their campaign 'investments' in subsidy and tax breaks.
What if we do a government $10 million dollar worldwide contest for the BEST design for alternative energy, harnessing wind, sun, water, temperature (drill down and use thermal heat?), gravity, electromagnetism, heck subneutrino particles, whateva... something that's safe, and can generate X megawatts of power using no fossil fuels? AND, promise a 30% royalty for the inventor for the 17 years of patent duration, promising that the US gov't will fund that venture commercially, and buy it for EVERY SINGLE US military installation worldwide to replace whatever power the military installation currently uses, because it will save us money anyway?
Do you think anyone would take that bet? Would a corporation with brilliant minds not go... oooh... gov't contracts for EVERY SINGLE military base? That's TRILLIONS in profit... omfg... lets GOOOOOO. You'd have Google, Apple, Microsoft (ALL bleeding heart environmentalist companies) throwing their excess billions into development the next day.
NASA used to do that. Government grants and research. Heck, National Geographic did that, that's how we got Diane Fossey to be able to study Great Apes in Rwanda. We got a man on the moon, velcro, glue, space tiles, rockets, star wars. Now NASA's budget is 1/10 what it was. We can't develop poop today. That funding was cut 12 years ago.
Private sector means that the company can be Chinese, Russian, Japanese, Norwegian, etc. When we funded research via the gov't, the US gov't did the hiring, and US scientists were the best in the world. Today, we have almost no US scientists left.
I know Republicans think it's a good thing... because the Republican party is funded by multinational corporations, read: fully or partially owned by other nations. I know Republicans like watching foreign owned news (FOX), ever wonder what all that 'privatization' means to us as a nation?
This research isn't an idea floating around anywhere except in my head. It's a battle Democrats can't even put on the table because, right now, taking out medicare and Social Security is STILL the foreign bought Republican Party's main agenda, as demonstrated by the House's new fiscal cliff proposal, the same one the foreign corporations approved of a few years ago. Cut cut cut. Why? What HAPPENS if we do NOT pay interest on those T-bills for a few months? Nothing. Not one thing. Some people will lose some money. Big deal.
Instead, we want to take out Social Security and raise medicare. Why? Because more brilliant Americans will move away. Because more wealthy Americans will move away. This is getting to be a not very good place to live. Cut education and EPA... we can live in a cesspit with our illiterate kids. Cut firefighters and emergency personnel. Who wants to live where there's no disaster recovery? Cut minimum wage. Why? Because we can turn into China 20 years ago. Who pays for these ideas?
Interesting how every Republican makes millions a year when their gov't salary is under $200K. Where does that money come from, when they enter office dead broke? Sounds like a bit conspiracy theory doesn't it? But what are the CONSEQUENCES of all this cutting?
What happens when your business is doing badly, your customers are fewer? You cut employees, stop reordering inventory, cut the electricity? What happens to your business next? You go under. What happens when the US goes under?
The flip side is, how do you save your business, WITHOUT investing another penny into it? And please give a realistic response. Because I cannot think of a single way. Period. You start cutting the basics, and it's OVER.
