Man, this is a tough contest. I'd would have guessed goldstone first too because it is manmade. Helenite would have been my second guess but it's volcanic glass and you've ruled out glass. I don't fool with man made stuff much but I'll guess Alexandrium....Mel

The name does begin with A-E though. Here's another hint: It was something else before it was a lapidary material -- not manufactured just to be cut up by us wierdos.
