Got some new specimens yesterday. Finally made time to post pics. This first one will be going in an oxalic soak to remove the white coating on the quartz crystals. They're crystal clear and heavily included with tourmaline. This is a nicer specimen of something I posted earlier. Nice cluster of topaz crystals. And finally the latest freebie.

'bout time you posted some TN's, jakesrocks. I'm kidding, but enjoyed seeing your new specimens. Love the schorl tourmaline specimen and hope you'll post a pic of it after you give it a good bath, Don. That is some killer color on your pink grossular! Very nice reshoot of the hyalite and topaz!! I like the freebie!!

I'm sorry, Don. (excuse: think it must be those organisms in the yogurt)
I went back and looked at your other hyalite and topaz TN. Remember your cool uv shot of it.
I like this one since it has several gorgeous sherry-colored topaz crystals covered with hyalite. But, I like both of 'em.
Do the topaz have to stay out of light, such as sunlight and/or lamp light.

I think the topaz from Mexico is different from the stuff in the U.S. I think it can sit out without loosing its color. But my thumbnails are stored in drawers where light isn't a problem.
I'll try to get a UV shot of the new specimen tonight. I don't have a room dark enough for daytime UV shots.

Thanks, jakesrocks, and look forward to seeing the specimen in uv! I think there is some topaz that will fade in sunlight/lighting, but will regain it's color. No, I believe I'm wrong, maybe it's zircon? I hope gemfeller will read this and maybe he will please correct me and tell us a little more.

I've heard that the color will return if the stone is stored in a dark place for a few days. I have a single Utah topaz crystal that I'll have to experiment with.

Thank you, jakesrocks! Please don't ruin one of your topaz xtals for an experiment. Have you purchased any of the topaz from the guys that mine the topaz in Utah? I contacted them via their ebay store a couple of years ago and asked a lot of questions. Received some mins yesterday and I'll try to take some pics and post them. Have a trio of spiny shells that I hope you and other forum members may help with their id's. Also won a conjoined White Fir Springs t-egg from @rocks2dust that I need to pay for. It's a beauty.

I'm not worried about that specimen Jan. It has a big chip out of it, and I have a better specimen for the collection. Besides, I enjoy experimenting with stuff.
I've got that schorl & quartz specimen soaking in white vinegar for a couple of days. I decided to take the gentle route before mixing up a batch of oxalic.

Your schorl will smell wonderful, too! Just kidding, but looking forward to seeing it after you bathe it. Don, I think they used to find a lot of schorl tourmaline out at the Hogg Mine not far from our home.
Off topic, but Rick bought some of the vinegar with the 'mother' in it to help lower his blood pressure. What is the mother? Funniest thing is watching him drink it for the first time and he hasn't touched it since then. Right now, it's just sitting in our kitchen cabinet, lol.
edit: forgot to mention it's Braggs vinegar (with the mother, whomever she is)

I don't think that the color will return once it is gone... I think that the color just stays preserved (like cinnibar? )

WOO HOO. Got company coming. My trucker friend mtmadman, Bob will be arriving in town tonight to pick up a load. He doesn't load until Friday, so I'll pick him up in the morning. He says he has a bunch of specimens for me. He self collects wherever his job takes him, and always has a load of specimens & fossils on the truck with him.

I'll post pics Jan. He'll be hauling a piece of my old equipment with him. I'm giving him my 20" HP vibrolap. I'm getting too old to be hauling that big, heavy thing around, so I'll give it to him to get some use out of.
Wanted to take him for a ride in the hot rod, but the roads are solid mud. Can't get in any trouble here at the house.

Possible discovery. This is a flake I took off of a Wyoming fossil shale piece. On examination under a loupe, I found what appears to be 2 tiny fish hatchlings. The longest is 1/4" long. Need to do a little more cleaning and put it under the microscope to be sure.

Some time in next month i'm planning to get some prehnite... Since I will be mining I will have lots of thumbnail pieces most likely if your interested (if not alot, I might be able to find you some thumbnail stuff laying around). If your interested I can do a good deal for you (since I'd hope your trustworthy, seeing others high remarks about you, and a large post count compared to some )... 2 step payment like my box deal accept the 1st payment would be just for shipping and you can pay whatever you think the value is worth when you get it.

Well, got to see Bob for a few hours today. He brought me some nice specimens & cutting material. At least this time he only brought a few pounds of rocks, instead of loading me down with tonnage. For the first time since I've known him, I sent him off with more rocks than he brought to me. That's a blessing when you're as old as me, and trying to reduce the rock pile to a few hundred choice pounds. I'll post pics tomorrow of the haul I got. Of the specimens I got from Bob yesterday, only one fits this thread. I'll start a new thread in another location to show everything. Staurolite, (Fairy crosses) from an unknown location in Arizona. Hope to get more info on the location later. (Edited) -- This is a Zincian Staurolite from Squaw Peak, North of Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona.
