Jim, I agree that big oil and all big industries blow smoke.
You have to remember that there is propaganda and then there is the truth!!
The open pit mining in Fort Mac is only a small percentage of the sands. Watch the vid below. This explains where most of the oil sand production comes from.
The last half of the vid explains the "Sag-D" process.
Hundreds of years ago the native North Americans were using the oilsands that are exposed along the banks of the Clearwater river to make the canoes water proof. Oil naturally enters that river and has for 1000's of years. No one bitched until the oil industry started to mine it.
One other thing to remember is. What do the people who make these propaganda statements do for a living? They don't work, they make there money from bashing big industries on there oil based I-phones' computers etc. While they are "flying from one protest to another" if they were true environmentalists they would walk or ride horses. They don't live by there own words. Much like the Demarcates and liberals.
Its real easy to bash an industry you know nothing about.
Jim I would suggest that you open up Google earth. Search Fort McMurry and have a look for yourself.
Watch this one to.
Just had to add a comment from the vid.

The oil sands are helping to fund all the social spending programs in the province. Without it, all of you unemployable environmentalists wouldn't get your welfare cheques or government subsidized jobs. You environmentalists complain, but your voices fall on deaf ears. There's billions upon billions already invested in these assets, and there's going to be billions more. Get on with your lives and do something productive
