Helen: I carry a .40 or 45 auto a lot myself out of convenience because my favorite wheel gun is hard to conceal and heavy, but the problem with autos, is they're simply not as reliable as a wheel gun. Those little 380's can be pretty touchy and the cartridge itself actually has less muzzle energy than the the 22 mag by a lot. And muzzle energy has a lot to do with knockdown power. Muzzle energy for a 380 critical defense is 200 ft pounds. 22 mags run 312-322 foot pounds because they are moving fast. Easy to find 22 mag hollow points too. Even a little 9mm subcompact which is super reliable and easy to shoot has 330+ foot pounds, way better than a 380 and holds 16 rounds. Depending on who you read, the 22 mag either equals or sometimes exceeds the 380 in one shot kills but then, it's always better to hit with a 22 than miss with a big bore. I myself like big bullets but placement is always an important issue and lots of gals are recoil shy and shoot the 22 mag more accurately than something larger.
Also, my wife doesn't like messing with safeties and finds autos complicated and scary to carry cocked. Even I'm a little put off by the new autos with no safeties at all like Glocks and Springfields but you get used to them.
Another thing I like about wheelguns is you can have all your shots in the cylinder but no safeties are engaged and no springs under tension. An auto's clips not emptied often so the springs can rest will have the springs get fatigued and feeding issues can arise. Heck, even my most reliable autos fail to feed once in awhile ( my 1911 had a failure to feed during my CCW test) or you'll get a hard primer and have a failure to fire, especially if you use any non US ammo. Mostly though it's a matter of taste and comfort. I shoot no large bore handgun as well as I shoot my Smith revolvers or my 1911's but I love large capacity magazines and the lighter weight of all the plastic guns. My favorite guns tend to pull my pants down around my knees which is inconvenient. *L* Every gun is a compromise in the long run and only a good as the person handling them I guess.
Lee, Can't go wrong with a 357 wheelgun. One shot kills in the high 90% and most are accurate as all get out. Kinda heavy though.. Got to wear your rock pick on the opposite side to stay balanced so's ya don't hafta walk all tilted over like *L*.Mel

Best way to decide is to go to a store and HOLD them, the grip and the kick are most important, and for many women, the typical grip is just too big to hold comfortably, and a poor grip means you can lose the weapon more easily if someone grabs your arm, not to mention trigger fatigue. What good is stopping power or accuracy if you are scared of the gun?
I didn't say it was the ONLY option, I said it was MY favorite:).

Helen: The Ruger LCR only weighs about 15 oz and is strictly an up close and personal pistol with only a 1.9 inch barrel. Can carry my 357 my pocket and it doesn't even show. Super comfortable to shoot in 22 mag, very accurate at self defense ranges, reliable, DA only, nice trigger and of course no safeties, slides etc. No exposed hammer to snag on anything. Just point and shoot.
If a slide ain't racked, it don't do ya a lick of good and it's an extra step before you can fire. I always carry cocked. My wife just hates autos and racking slides, loading clips etc, even on my 22's. How it fits your hand is super important. As you've said, a weapon of any sort is a very personal item. I'm even pathologically fixated on my carry knives. Heck, I'd carry a sword too if it were legal because again, they are so personal and pretty. Guess that's why there's such a mystique surrounding weapons through the ages....Mel
I really like shooting 9mm and find it comfortable and fun but then I don't mind 45's either....Mel

Doh. you were posting as I edited... I didn't want to go on and on and on about guns... and I didn't see your post. Sorry about that!
It takes one second/motion to rack a well oiled and broken in slide, but again, it's got to fit YOU. Telling someone what gun to buy is like telling someone what type/size shoes to wear:P.

S&W Detective special isn't too hard to conceal, and with hollow points will do lots of damage. But for every day CC, I like my little Beretta 21-A .25 Cal. with fragmenting rounds. 8 in the mag and one in the chamber. Just click off the safety ,point and squeeze. Don't have to rack it to fire the first round. Slips unnoticed into a jacket pocket.

Helen if you ever get a chance try a Sig 229 DAK double action only in .357sig. Also comes in 9mm or .40cal. Spendy but the design seems to reduce recoil significantly. The DAO means you can carry it with a round in the chamber with no danger. As I recall the grip size out of the box was barely big enough for my smaller (for a man) hands so it might fit you OK. Best semi auto grouping at the range for me has always been a Sig. My groupings were close with a Taurus M9 clone and the real Beretta too. Elizabeth does not care for handguns but her rifle marksmanship is amazing for someone with no interest in practicing.

Actually... that would be the handgun I'd want if I bought a new one today, Lee. But... I don't need more guns:).

Wow a regular witch hunt. I guess the Dear Leader does not like his kind voting the way of the people over the "party line". Coming from a person whose gun rights have been greatly diminished. I salute these 4 fine people.

Helen: So Obama isn't anti gun, he only votes or has voted that way because he's toeing the party line. What's that make him other than a toadying weakling that is afraid to stand up for his principles? The president is supposed to stand up for and support the constitution but then I don't believe he's not anti gun because he surrounds himself and alligns himself with a cadre of anti gunners. I believe he's anti truth cause he has a dang hard time telling it *L*.....Mel

You cannot get ANYTHING done if you have no allies. In politics, your party holds the MAJORITY position for policy. In both parties, you have people who don't agree with every party platform, but unless they are very personally powerful already, they must all more or less toe the party platform. Obama is no exception. I think he's not anti-gun just because he's passed up numerous opportunities to push that agenda. Further, the agenda they are pushing are pretty mild. No one on either side is proposing banning guns. They want background checks and banning assault rifle parts. Before Bush, these were both the case already, it's nothing new. But it still got defeated.

Bill, there's a difference between being not anti-guns and pro-guns. He's not pro-guns.
And even pro-gun people can see that in inner city gangs, letting them buy guns at will, no background checks and no waiting periods may not be so bright. While I'm pro-gun, I'm certainly not pro crazy people stockpiling them, or getting out of jail for a drive by shooting and going right to the store to buy another one.
If you shoplift a $1 item from a store, the store can ban you from ever going back in there, so why shouldn't they ban someone who committed a crime with a gun from having a gun? Well if you don't allow background checks, how would you know if a buyer committed a past crime with a gun?

None of the legislation that was being considered would have prevented the shootings that initiated this latest push to incrementally remove guns from the public.

You know, that happens on both sides.
Everyone is so terrified that giving an inch may lead to losing a yard, that they won't give an inch, even tho it makes sense. I fully agree that Sandy Hook would not have been prevented with background checks, the guns were legal. However, should a criminal who was imprisoned for rape or home invasion get out and find a gun show, walk in and buy a gun and head right for their victim's house in retribution?
I tend to agree more with the not giving an inch, but the above does happen, so if background checks were required, it wouldn't bother me all that much.

Helen, hope you are stocked on .380 ammo. Gun Stores Seeing A Run On Ammunition POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) – Ammunition sellers and manufacturers say there’s been a run on bullets and they can’t keep their shelves stocked. Jeff Dillard who runs National Armory in Pompano says it’s the worst he’s ever seen. “I have never seen ammo so impossible to get,” said Dillard. miami.cbslocal.com/2013/04/18/gun-stores-seeing-a-run-on-ammunition/Makes one wonder how anyone thinks that the bombing is a good example for the need for tighter gun control. Seems to me to be the other way around. How would it be to be the person with the bomber in your boat in YOUR yard? This, after literally thousands of police and paramilitary have swept the area without finding him. I do believe I would find it good to be armed in such a situation. . .

They have been running ammo for the last 5 years... Obama has been soooo good to the gun industry that they should be paying the democrats.
The bombing is NOT a good reason for tighter gun control. It's also NOT a good reason for tighter 'national security' either.

Helen, the gun show question is a good point, and of course a bad person can buy a gun there without a background check. Sounds more than reasonable.
Thing is, it is like you said. If they get that law passed, what is next? Well, they will say that since it is still legal to sell guns to private parties without background checks, and one can gift family arms to an heir without background checks, the ONLY way to put teeth into the law is to require universal background checks. Once this is in place they can build a registry, and confiscate any gun in the nation at will.
