Good insights & stories guys!
It reminded me of this moment when
I visited Tonto Monument many many moons ago.
Back in those days the monument was wide open
You could walk right to it and explore.
Just as the builders had done a thousand years previously
At the time I was there with my 3 kids.
We were the only people there,
20 miles from any town,
on a dirt road in a deserted location,
in the middle of the high desert
on the north end of the Superstition Mountains
So were up in this cave ruins exploring &
its getting to be dusk. Off to the north
a huge thundercloud was rolling in.
A monsoon storm is brewing.
What a sight!
I was in awe of the lightening flashes and impending storm.
Plus I was wondering what the Salado Indians must of thought,
a thousand years ago?
I’m sure they would have scurried up to the cave,
preparing for the driving rain, the intense lightening flashes,
& the thunderous booming echoing throughout the canyons
It was then that my little girl (Shelly) looked up to me,
with a bit of a startled look grabbed my hand and said:
‘Daddy, we better go-- before the Indians return.’
Ya know… in my head I thought:
You just may be right, Shelly Belly
and we took our leave.
As the Salado Indians took in
their night of storm and waking to a fresh morn.
