Build and sell fire pits. The basic design burns slow and is hard to start a fire in due to a lack of draft. And they are smoky for the same reason. So those sitting around it get smoked. Tried all kind of bottom vents to no avail. This trick turned it into an incinerator, even burning dampish leaves. some construction tip tricks- Lazy Susan rotates by force of wire wheel: Guide for surgical tool, the plasma cutter, cut made by rotating Lazy Susan: Surgery complete: Grinder force also rotates table: Lazy smokey fire in fire pit: Add turbo cap: So as the heat rises thru the center hole the air gets drawn in around the gap around the edge of the cap creating draft on to the coals. This creates an air flow that turns into a well fed fire. Smoke lifted well away by the torch effect. It does increase the amount of fuel needed quite a bit. But result fairly dramatic. Gets hot. Scott, I am thinking about you, should you want a real torch, pour a cup of kerosine into the center hole. Or even used motor oil will ignite and burn off completely and cleanly. Great application for a used motor oil drip burner. Will see if cap gets cherry red in the dark tonight.

Great idea! You should weld two handles to the turbo cap to be able to remove it while hot, otherwise the grilling area would be limited to the hole in that turbo cap.

It could be put over a camp fire and get the same result. Maybe a square one to serve as a cooking surface. Flow may be hindered tough. Yes Adrian, handles perfect, or a hinge and a handle.

I'm gonna bet that turbo cap DOES glow red hot tonight, especially if you get that puppy stoked. Cool idea, so long as it doesn't melt down.
Can get your face sunburned at night!

Used motor oil gets it HOT. I capped the drain so it all burned off. Ever heard of a used motor oil drip furnace? Good application. It is mild steel, not likely to get hot enough.

Wow! Great idea to avoid smoking those around the fire. I gave up bbqing outside because the smoke hurt my eyes.
A small version of that would be nice, too; they are also attractive.

Were you cooking on a common back yard type grill Pat ? The smoke is tricky to control on those. The sugar and spices from the sauce can do a number on the eyes in particular. Some woods are worse than others too.

Similar idea to a Rocket stove. Burns hotter with less smoke.

@sjamesp it was a big gas burning grill with charcoal. The smoke seemed to have a magnetic attraction to me no matter where I stood.
I didn't know that the sugar and spices, or the wood had anything to do with it. I figured it was how the wind blew and that magnetic attraction!
