Nice specimens. But I think the crystals in the quartz are tourmaline, not rutile. Tourmalinated quartz makes great cabs too.

I think the diamond shaped holes held tourmaline rods at one point. May go back this weekend to find more! I was told by Dave that the rods were rutile and there are quartz with the golden rods too. Black hairy needle point type rocks. Is that better? Ha ha

There could be some rutile especially in the second specimen. It's difficult to speculate what the diamond shapes were but they're not the right crystal shape for tourmaline. They look as if cubic crystals of some sort have been replaced: pyrite, garnet, spinel or???

What's an almadene garnet? Those aren't all pretty and red like the ones James offered for sale. Do they just need to be cleaned up? Will they get red if you tumble them? How do you find them? Are they just laying around on the ground, or do you have to dig for them? Okay, that's enough questions for now.

These garnets are typically very common in places (google says so). Look like rabbit turds. Very plentiful. No digging just surface finds. I think James' garnets may have been tumbled and/or iron removed. These are red underneath the iron.

broseph, seeing the images of the garnets in matrix solves the mystery of the diamond-shapes in the image above. I'm pretty sure they were originally garnets before they were dissolved and replaced by quartz.

They are very heavy and behave a bit like gold in settling in certain spots of the stream flow.

Lust your haul of garnets and nice tourmalinated quartz specimen, broseph82! Where did you collect them? 'Bama? Agree with gemfeller, that the second specimen looks like it may have golden needles of rutilated quartz with tourmalinated quartz. Very cool. Are you planning on keeping the quartz specimens for displaying? I'll arm wrestle you for the almandine in green schist. Just kiddin' with you, but it's a very nice specimen. Is it from 'Bama? jamesp, that's a killer pic with the garnets sparkling.

I have about 3lbs of garnets in the vibe right now with 1lb of ceramic smalls. 3lbs garnets 1lb ceramic media 2Tbsp Borax 2Tbsp 120/220

When I was a kid my neighbor took me up to Rabun and Towns county area and were able to sift thru the spoils of Laurel Creek and the Ledbetter mines. Rugged country in NE Georgia, lots of gem type rocks. Laurel creek enters the west fork of the mighty Chatuge River, and has rich minerals and gem type stones. Mines long closed, but those creeks are still there.
Another garnet hole in NW Atlanta, Rottenwood Creek, they may be pyrope garnets.
Gold rich Lumpkin county has a lot of fine garnets too.
let's go sometime

Let's do it jamespWe are wanting to hound this weekend. What you got going on? The mountain locations need to be researched. That is Warwoman territory and very rugged. The Atlanta spot is a serious mountain type creek and has beautiful quartzite along with garnets. But the weather may need to be nice, and Rottenwood Creek NOT with high water. Let me look at weather forecasts. An alternative is a heavy source of iron garnets with fine crystal shapes near the town of Wedowee Alabama. They are in the soil roads, and collected w/a broom and dust pan. Some up to 1.5 inches. That place can be done in any climate weather. Let me look at the area and pinpoint where these garnets are. chlorite shists there too, that I have sold for display pieces.
