spiritstone, seems like great opportunity to rock hunt in all the dried up area. Lot's of exposure. The drought has made it a lot easier, keeping me dry and warm. Most times I cant stay in for more then a few mins before the muscles cramp from freezing, then the painful sting when you start to defrost "ice water". I bet that water is just right for hanging out all day in you have down south.

atheist or agnostic
Agnostic is another word for atheist. Agnostics don't get stoned to death like an atheist. Jim

He cant deny not seeing the evolution of this planet that's happened over and over and over again. I cant recall finding garbage in with those snails or creatures of the past between the layers and layers of time gone by. I know it wasnt caused by human intervention or the snails technological advancements to be extinct? leaves only one culprit, Planets choice? Religion, I wont get into that subject...Way to many differences-beliefs among the people of the world. I dont think George can comprehended how uncharted those waters still are. We dont come back to show and tell others whats may lay ahead of us. Plus I cant find any fossil record of it. But I believe in something.

I see a lot about it in the news, especially about the fighting over crops irrigation and things like fines for taking too long showers. I would like to hear from members who are in drought stricken areas, get an 'on the ground' report and hear insights and comments.
At our house in San Jose, Ca, we are restricted to yard watering twice a week. Our days are Mondays and Thursdays. Sprinklers turn on in the morning about 3-4:00am. Most plants are surviving. Marion berries didn't get enough. We should have hand watered them more. Berries need their feet in the water. We had tenderly carried these back home from Shelton, Washington. Fruit trees gave very little fruit. Might be due to the weather or something else. Trees otherwise healthy. We don't have any grass, just lots of trees and bushes and flowers. Most lawns in the neighborhood are brown or turning brown. I think many lawns will green up when the rains come. A strong El Nino is predicted for this winter. Hope it comes. Inside, we use minimal water for bathing, full loads in the dishwasher and in the clothes washer. Never let faucets just run. We do not tote buckets of water from the shower to use outside. Shower is upstairs. Non-soapy dish water from the sink gets tossed on potted plants. Will see what the next bill says. Son cut 80% of his water usage just by turning off the sprinklers. And that's the San Jose Report...

George is quite the character, He is a philosopher supreme with something for and against everyone. He points out our inconsistencies, oddities and foibles like few people can. Love him for that.He hits hard and hits true.

I see a lot about it in the news, especially about the fighting over crops irrigation and things like fines for taking too long showers. I would like to hear from members who are in drought stricken areas, get an 'on the ground' report and hear insights and comments. In a large part of the country, water is scarce and lawns should be banned. For others, it is not so important. Certainly a good part of California and most of the Southwest have big water issues and extended long term drought and need to be vigilant on water usage. For places like the North and South East, water conservation, though a seemingly good thing, is not necessary except for times of drought as long as you have an adequate supply. Even in areas that seem to have sufficient water, we are drawing down aquifers and sink holes, salt infiltration, chemical and and petroleum infiltration and other issues abound. We have voluntary watering bans where I live. It amounts to odd/even days and is not very restrictive at this time. We have the local problem of too many newcomers in a place where water is drawn from an aquifer. Not too bad at the present time but the trend and projection is not looking all that good for future generations. The town I lived in previously had to close 7 of eleven town wells due to pollution from the local Air Force base spilling jet fuel and BASF spilling chemical solvents into the ground over a period of many years and subsequently making its way to the well fields. Luckily and unluckily our town joined the MWRA and has great tasting and great quality tap water. It came with a cost. You had to pay for sewage treatment and to help clean Boston Harbor but great if you eat the local seafood and care about the environment!

I fully agree on the planets choice and we are not killing the planet, we are killing ourselves. We have fished the oceans (2/3rds) of the planet surface almost to extinction (conservation is helping in some areas) along with large bodies of water that chemicals have totally killed (mouth of the Mississippi and others especially near China). 800,000,000 people that lack sufficient food and water makes me think we need a better plan.
Billy asked how many of those people that are hungry and thirsty are that way because of their government. So, to be fair lets cut that number in half and call it 400,000,000. That is still a rude awakening. How long would it take to count that high? For me it is mind boggling.
It is also estimated that we throw enough food away to feed those people. Do we just say "survival of the fittest" and to hell with them? What does 400,000,000 bodies look like? We are spoiled, pretty much don't give a damn (as a whole)(I am not saying everyone) and are going to continue living to excess no matter what.
How many people in this country have a storage unit because they do not have room for all their stuff? Two people living in a 50,000 square foot house are using up a huge amount of resources and energy just to show off. Urban sprawl that is taking up a lot of farm land. People having 4,5,6 kids. I could go on and on.
It is going to end and it is not going to be pretty. If you look deep enough you can see that we, us, you and I are going to help a lot of people starve to death unless there are a lot of conservation plans put into effect. A huge percentage of people will not look that deep because it is icky and not their problem. Wake up call is coming though and icky will be everywhere. Jim
Okay people, bash the hell out of me for bringing up the dark side and be sure to inform me that I am not a soothsayer. Jim

bushmanbilly Looks like were starting to announce agriculture disasters in AB. Grass hoppers have started to take fields over. Relief options for Alberta farmers will be up for discussion among federal and provincial agriculture ministers on Wednesday as extreme drought conditions prompt a state of disaster in Parkland County. On Tuesday, Parkland County Council unanimously voted to declare a state of agricultural disaster as moisture levels in some areas of Alberta are at the lowest levels recorded in the last 50 years and crops in some areas of Parkland County are also being ravaged by grasshoppers. “These extreme drought conditions are devastating crops across Parkland County,” said Mayor Rod Shiagec, calling on the federal and provincial government to set up a disaster recovery program. “By declaring a state of agricultural disaster, we hope to call attention to this extremely important issue.” The July 7 provincial crop report shows recent rainfall improved surface soil moisture ratings minimally in south, central and northeast Alberta but was “not substantial enough” to improve sub-soil moisture ratings. Crop conditions declined three per cent to only 27 per cent rated good or excellent. Hay and pastures are in “dire need of moisture” as ratings fell a further four per cent to only 12 per cent rated good or excellent. “If this coming week doesn’t see more rain, I expect we’re going to see many more municipalities across north and central Alberta making the same announcement as Parkland,” said Humphrey Banack, vice-president of the Alberta Federation of Agriculture. Banack said disaster relief will be on the agenda during the Canadian Federation of Agriculture’s round table meeting with provincial and federal agriculture ministers in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Wednesday as a relief strategy “is the first step towards recognizing that there’s a big problem here.” “We’re looking for drought relief and that may be anywhere from helping them move feed or pump water for livestock to ways for us to manage programs that let us get our crops off or changes to crop insurance that would maybe allow us to plow our crops down earlier than typical just to allow us to get through this year and get ready for the next season,” he said. Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier said he shares the concerns of farmers and encourages them to access crop insurance, farm loans and other programs offered by the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation. “Municipalities may choose to issue a declaration to increase awareness of the challenging conditions in their region,” Carlier said. “Rest assured, we are monitoring the weather and moisture situation very closely to understand the impact on crops and pasture.” www.edmontonsun.com/2015/07/14/drought-conditions-prompt-state-of-disaster-in-parts-of-alberta

Don't need sprinklers when you're a redneck in the south.
But I have lived through droughts, limited water usage, etc. It's sad for you members out west. But hey, no humidity, or very little.
