The Cajon Pass is on fire, and over here we're having severe thunder storms. Tornado's just a few miles east. Little town of Webster just lost power. Tornado right over them. Gonna be a rough night.

It's going to be a really rough fire season here in southern CA. Several years of drought have left things as dry as tinder and when Santa Ana's begin to blow the arsonists will be getting out their road flares. There are many other causes for our fires, of course, but in recent years arson has been high on the list. We've had several major fires that have burned to our city limits in past years. This was the sight from my front window for several days during the Camarillo Springs Fire in 2013. It actually came much closer, burning down to the 101 Freeway about a mile away and destroying several homes, Local residents don't trust media and emergency broadcast warnings: we've learned to use our eyes and noses to warn of fire danger. We've had the car loaded with irreplaceable items and ready to go on more than one occasion. In the 22 years we've lived here we've been lucky but we never know what the next fire season will bring. Fortunately if major fires break out in our area this summer there will be no lack of water for aerial drops because the choppers and "scooper" aircraft use plentiful salt water from the nearby Pacific. It's rumored they sometimes pick up a surfer or two but so far that's pure urban legend.

To bad it wasnt heading South west you sure need it. This "Low" is a small hurricane with Rain bands swinging NW. The center of this rainmaker is coming in from the South east cutting across the border around Sask and Manitoba into the US. I see why its going to bring with it twisters.

A small respite from the drought this morning. Huge amounts of moisture sent into the atmosphere by now tropical storm Dolores falling as thundershowers in the San Diego area. This first big, fat drops fell around 6 am, lots of thunder and lightning. Have had several small fires started by lightning strikes, they have been put out quickly. Also have caused some power outages.
The storm wasn't expected to hit (say the weather guessers, who have totally downplayed the oncoming weather) until 9 am, now they are saying we'll start getting the next big hit around 11 am. While the precipitation is certainly welcome, there are a lot of festivities around San Diego this weekend, including OTL Tournament, first weekend of horse racing season in Del Mar, and Gay Pride celebration. Guess it's going to rain on their parade. Maybe they can enjoy a rainbow or two. Hope no one is injured by lightning.
Be safe, spirit.

Rockpicker, I hope some of that moisture makes it this far north. I doubt it will though.
"Weather guessers." I love it! Ours say we have a higher than usual chance of storms through Monday, but no more than 50%. On the bright side, our city council -- which has required extensive red tape for xeriscaping approval -- has relented and is making drought-resistant landscaping easier and cheaper to install. Huge water-guzzling English-style lawns in the desert never have made sense to me.

Those fires can sneak up really fast and as far as I can tell there's no reliable warning system in place. Firefighters and police had to go house-to-house during the Springs Fire here to save residents.

Honestly, I lost Everything! My rock collection of 39 years and all my mother's stuff. I barely got out with a change of clothes and my dog. Gally was flipping out; he nearly bolted. I literally had 10 minutes. No ins... Thanks to the VA, I have a little camp trailer and a new rock collection forming. Michael

Heh!!! It rained here this morning. I didn't see it happen or hear it happen, but the street was downright wet. Really shiny wet!
Then it dried up and the shiny disappeared.
No runoff. Not a drop.

Hey Pat, great that you got some of this liquid sunshine as well! With the .99 inch that fell in San Diego at Lindbergh field yesterday, we are only .16 inch below normal for the year. Well, then we got more rain today, so I guess that makes it above normal now. Even my Padres got rained out today. The ground could not soak it all up, so there was runoff. With no real rain for awhile, storm drains and gutters have filled up with weeds and trash. Those blockages caused some flooding, but not too bad. No problems on the home front, although there is a low spot in the back that could cause the garage to flood. Took care of that a few years ago by installing a sump pump that dumps out to the street. As long as the power doesn't go out...
We've known this storm has been coming since at least last Wednesday, yet the weather guessers have downplayed it. On the news this evening, they said "the storm had caught people off guard." Only because they made everyone think it wouldn't amount to anything!! Morons! I miss John Coleman, he could tell it. I trusted his forecasts. There's gonna be more of these storms coming in the next few months. I hope they don't endanger lives with the "forecast" they choose to share with us. I certainly don't have any faith in them.

Lo and behold, the same storm reached L.A. and Ventura counties and dumped considerable moisture which we've desperately needed. It also helped greatly to control major wildfires. Much of the water was absorbed by the parched ground but we did have a fair amount of run-off. Our bed of lovely Calla lilies is located under our front porch and we were close to losing them -- they normally get hand-watered and the porch was sheltering them from the rain.
I guess I'll never understand people. My wife took the opportunity to grab a couple of small buckets and filled them several times with run-off from the gutter to water the lilies and other plants that weren't getting water from the storm. As she was filling the buckets a car screeched to a stop and the woman inside rolled the window down. "You're not!" she shouted archly. "I am," said my wife, and proceeded. I guess the silly woman thought we were going to drink the run-off or use it indoors. Oh well, go figure. They tell us to conserve and when we do it's ridiculed by some.

These guys are pretty good at finding water. Ever give them a thought? news.yahoo.com/water-witch-dowsing-california-drought-145325572.htmlTassey can’t explain what makes him special, why he apparently has this ability that others do not. He had hoped that one of his four kids might have the gift, but none did. Only him. Some have speculated it has something to do with the magnetic core of the earth. He doesn’t know. He just has something, a gift that God has given him to use, and he’ll likely use it until the day he dies. “The farmers here have been good to me all these years, to all of us here,” Tassey says. “Now it’s my turn.”

I haven't ever used rods to find aquifers, but I take 2 metal rods, one in each hand, bent to swing freely. I find buried waterlines, and follow them.Made many believers out of skeptics when I went to their homes, where I had never been, and found all their water lines.Magnetic field bound to be involved.I guess the reason never tried aquifers is water is everywhere underground here. snuffy

It was on a outcrop of Basalt on the opal claim. Never thought it worked until a few months later we were digging in a spot he pointed out as a source of water and we dug into a underground spring just a few feet under the surface, barely any flow but it was water. Turned me into a believer.
