Got a secluded cabin in Florida. Small town. About 10 years ago I drive in from Atlanta and catch father with 15 year old junior in climbing stands deer hunting. Chewed them out and walked them off the property cussing them the whole way. About 4 years ago junior steels my 5000 pound stack of steel. 6 inch angle iron 20 feet long, 400 pounds each... Junior finally gets caught stealing and does a 3 year prison sentence. Got out of prison 2 months ago and robberies commence. Small town locking their stuff up. Last week my neighbor sees my door open, reports two A/C units built into the wall gone.
Junior raised by his Grandfather living 5 houses away.
Both times my neighbors scared to death to implicate the 25 year old. Mostly a retired bunch. Pretty sure junior is hitting the meth.
Neighbors trapped in their own home. Concerned about leaving it unattended. One of them managing a new guard dog.
Both thefts reported to police. They are pretty sure it is junior.
Feeling raped and violated. Not sure what to do. He is in hot water with some of the other residents of the town for stealing from them; people that you do not want to anger. May be a matter of time that they make life hard for him. Thought about not reporting the theft last night and taking matters in my own hands. Then thought better, prison no fun. So you are helpless.
Will put up a game camera.
The boy gets out of prison and does not pay retribution to the one he was caught stealing from. That does not make sense.
I found his welding glove and an unusual cheap soda can at the spot where he stole the steel years ago. I took the soda can over to his Grandfather's house and showed it to him. He recognized it as a soda that he buys. That was before I reported or mentioned the crime. Told police.
Right now, if I met that kid in the woods where no one was around...well, I just don't know what I would do.
Neighbors scared of his Grandfather too. He's half crazy. They darn sure did not want to give me Grandfather's phone number. I understand, they have to live next to him.
Any ideas ?

If you were closer I would help. What works here is having some really scary friends pay them a visit. Jim

I hate a thief! While the game cam is a good idea, it will disappear if precautions aren't taken. Steel security boxes can be bought for them and lag bolted to a tree, but a crow bar can usually defeat them. Jim is handy with a torch and welder, so make your own out of 3/16 steel and use a hell for stout padlock. www.abus.com/us/Commercial-Security/Padlocks/Diskus-RIt's always a good idea to have a dummy cam that is easily spotted with the real deal up higher and out view watching the decoy. When they steal the decoy cam, you have video of it to turn over to the police. They need checked often when set on video as it eats batteries and fills SD cards quickly if it records lots of activity. This is the best cam for the money www.ebay.com/itm/GSM-Stealth-Cam-G42-NoGlo-Trail-Game-Infrared-Deer-Camera-STC-G42NG-/361312857326?hash=item541fecacee:g:5AkAAOSwtJZXWGCMof the 10 cams I currently have in the woods, 3 are Stealthcams and the only ones I have not had fail. I have had Bushnells, Brownings and others, but am happiest with Stealth. They have invisible black flash, so do not give away the location with glowing red LED's like many cams in this price range have. Whatever you do, stay far, far away from anything made by Wild game innovations! PM me for more info if you want

Found out he likes to smoke grass with his buddies in a given secluded spot at night. Walked in quietly and entered their smoking ring and handed him a blunt without saying a word and walked away. They never heard me till I was a few feet away. Won't forget the look on his face. He knew I knew his movements and when. It just made a statement. I hear you about bad company. They play on his level. May be possible to harness some of those guys in town. They will here all I have to say. Never hurts to stir that pot.

Confident they will catch him on next go. That's what the police suggest. They make more busts from still cameras than any other resource. This guy will get caught. He is marked and people are anxious to get him. Got to be a miserable existence. Hard working people a bad target for a thief. Very motivated to catch one. Thanks for the tips. May stick that camera way up in a tree. Borrow neighbor's long ladder. New cameras are amazing, 1000's of photos and long battery life. Fast computers too process. Thanks for the links Arlen.

James, give the boy the rope and he will hang himself with it. Game cams are a good choice of monitoring your property. You may have to set him up, and you may loose some more property......but the pictures would be worth it if you can send Junior for more time. Lots of people don't want to get involved but have cameras as well that can help you.....good luck!

James, sorry to hear of this robbery and those that preceded it. Perhaps a dose of "Appalachian Outlaws" deterrence would be gratifying...

Iodine crystals seize up the whole engine. No flushing or fixing possible. Bad guy has to buy everything from the fuel tank up to & including the engine to get his car back on the road. Takes about 3 miles of driving before the engine seizes up. Don't ask. I ain't telling about that NIS agents brand new jeep.

Oh, about a cup full in a tank of gas.
Or if you know any drag racers, have them get you a couple gallons of nitromethane to add to his tank. Once it hits his engine it'll run like a striped assed ape for about a minute, before it grenades.

I'm trying to think of my last vehicle that didn't have a gas cap cover or hood release that didn't open from the inside of the car/truck. Maybe my 71 Chevelle?
Fun suggestions like above simply invite criminal charges against the person doing the vehicle vandalizing.
My only suggestion is also the - given time he will hang himself route.
Maybe take small portable a/c units that can be removed and brought back home for the time being should you head down to your cabin.
No good having to live with the possibility of theft on your property, but maybe letting the locals deal with it is the best solution as you are far removed from being able to readily deal with such problems.

Yes it does cost the idiot lots of cash. But I prefer never ending aggravation. The best is a few rolling papers in the tank. Once they are gas logged and sink. They will eventually make there way to tank outlet or pump. Causing the driver to briefly run out of fuel. When suction pressure relaxes. The paper falls off. The engine will start again and run for awhile. Will cause him days of grief until the tank is replaced.

I'm for the camera evidence idea but against the vehicle vandalism idea. I believe that if you always try to do the right thing, things have a way of working themselves out for you.
I've lived in the same rural neighborhood for 27 years. During that time we have had three different young "men" (boys) who as teenagers began terrorizing the neighborhood. Two are dead now. One was shot dead by a friend's neighbor's wife who did so rescuing her husband from being beaten with the butt of a shotgun, and stomped on, by him and two of his buddies. No charges were pressed against the woman for defending her husband's life. The second one wrapped himself around a telephone poll.
The third one's family moved away shortly after "someone in the neighborhood" saw to it the he and his little brother got arrested for riding ATV's on public roads. The state confiscated their ATVs too. It was a good thing for them that they moved away when they did becasue "someone in the neighborhood" was about to get him arrested for dealing drugs out of their front yard as well.

Too old to give a damn.
I'd tell you a little trick with C4, but unless you have contacts, that stuff is hard to come by.
